What is the plan when Cam returns

I honestly can't think of a realistic scenario that I would resign Cam until next year.  There are just too many questions about his health.

I mean, sure, he could return after the bye week, lead us to 10 routs and then a cakewalk through the playoffs culminating with a 41-13 Super Bowl win.

But, back on this planet, I'm wondering if the Panthers have effectively broken him physically.  His shoulder looked okay from what little we have been able to see, but two games does not make a full season.  But, has he taken so much of a pounding over the years that he is going to go from one nagging injury to another?  I honestly do not know.

I hope not, but when the answer to what your offensive philosophy was "we have Cam Newton" for 7 or 8 years, and the answer to what you are doing about a lousy OL is "we have Cam Newton," you have to wonder.

I think that wondering will continue into next season.

He was doing really well before he reaggregated his shoulder. Was on pace to  have a better year than 2015

Yes and no. His completion percentage was better but he couldn't throw the deep ball and still had too many WTF throws while other times threading the ball between 2 guys. Too inconsistent.  The issue is whether Cam when he comes back can even approach his running ability in 2018. Without it he is not the same QB.

I'd like to say that's not a possibility.

I'd really like to...

Trade him for a first and two 2nds

I really think you are overestimating his trade value.

Looking at the teams that will definitely be looking for a new QB:

Dolphins - They will draft someone, probably Tua

Teams that are probably going to want a new QB:

Broncos - Flacco is garbage but they did just draft a QB in the 2nd

Teams that will maybe want a new QB:

Vikings - would have to draft with Cousins still on that contract for another year

Bengals - if they move on from Dalton it’s likely because they are picking top 5 and would draft a QB

Titans - could move on from Mariota, do have Tannehill as backup

Bucs - Could move on from Jameis

Bears - Trubisky is bad and they might pull the plug

Teams that will need a QB in the case of a retirement

Steelers, Chargers, Patriots

So 10 total possibilities, some of which won’t happen and most of which would be addressed in a deep QB draft. No one is likely going to give up anything substantial for a broken Cam with a deep QB draft. Plus you have to take on his $20M salary and probably agree to a big money extension.

Ron's just gotta be honest with Cam and himself. When Cam has been given enough rest, what does he look like in practice? Does he look like the Cam of old or does he still look hobbled?

If we're sitting at 4-2 or 6-2 and Cam returns and we lose a couple games and Cam still doesn't look right then Ron is gonna have a lot of pressure to pull Cam for Allen. It's not like we're coming off a good year last year. This situation could very well cost Ron his job if we lose out on a playoff run because we're experimenting to see where Cam is.

All that said it's still a little early.Fortunately we are 2-2, should be 3-1 or 4-0. The next couple games will determine the course of the season. I want Cam back at the helm and better than ever. But I'm afraid if Cam's still not healthy Ron is going to trot him out there at the detriment of the team.

For Cam. He has to come back and play as good or better than Allen. Kyle has set a bare minimum standard of play now at the QB position. If Cam can't exceed that then we are charting into unfamiliar territory.

Cam is a 30 year old QB with a 40 year old shoulder.  No one has any clue on how this will shake out.

His shoulder may not even be the only problem.

And that's the thing. People talk about "when Cam gets healthy" as if it can be assumed that he'll stay healthy.

That is not a given.

Heck, it wasn't that long ago that a lot of us were fully prepared to see "healthy Cam" playing this season because of the shoulder clean up. That expectation lasted about three series into the third preseason game.

It ain't that simple, folks.

So 10 teams that may need qb.

So two (dolphins and bengals) will suck high enough to draft a qb in a prettt deep qb class.

Denver will go 1-2 yr with Lock to see who he is.

Then you just named four qbs (mariota, winston, dalton and cousins) whom wont be on the market very long. And are capable starters any day of the week.

Trubisky will play out his contract and probably get an extension. He’s not great but hes above average. His value atm may be more than an injured and older cam.

So that leaves two teams out of the 10 you listed. Who are those teams? Idk but it is 2 teams.

This is the big thing with Cam for me. It was the shoulder, now it’s the foot, what will it be next? It’s very hard to trust him to be healthy and stay healthy and the long term plan for him absolutely can’t be “well we will just play him until he gets hurt then have Allen come again” and then repeat for the next 5 years.

If he comes back and plays great for the last 8 or whatever games of the season then sure let him prove he can stay healthy in 2020 in the last year of his deal and consider extending him if he plays well and stays healthy. If he plays poorly or gets hurt then it’s time to move on. See if there is a good trade and if not just release him and let him pick his new team. Then hope Allen continues his strong play and becomes the franchise QB, if not then try Grier and if he fails then draft someone else.

To me that is the only path forward for this team.
