If you a top level athlete . Burning as many calories as you eat.and need to recover as soon as possible.  True protein  from real protein  sources are essential. its not like your going to get fat or even retain any of that fat as an NFL pro. Your body is going to use that to regenerate.

I have seen interviews with JJ Watt where he talks about having to consume 8k calories daily to maintain his playing weight with his workout routine. Says he’s sick to death of eating chicken.

He may be sick of chicken, but hes still producing.  He could eat beef or pork too. Cam does not recover as well as he could with out pure protein. Period. Their is no health risk when you work out like a top flight pro athelete

Eh. Don't really like how misleading this article is.

So effectively this is nothing new. Just an analysis of old studies with a different conclusion based around the concept of an opinionated idea, which is a big enough variable to change the outcome of something like this.

Harvard recently published their own article in counter to this new upbringing of ideas:

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/2019/09/30/flawed-guidelines-red-processed-meat/

The Harvard review concludes this to be the optimal dietary plan:

Irony of it all appears to be nutritional research supports the idea veganism is the most optimal dietary plan for human health. I assume both Cam Newton and @Jeremy Igo are fond of that news.

I highly doubt that Cam Newton is more "injury prone" from a vegan diet. Far from it. And him slimming down isn't because he's unable to acquire all the nutrients he needs to stay big. More likely it was a choice for him to slim down, because it wouldn't be hard to bulk up even on a vegan diet. Plenty have done it.

The article states “low in processed and red meats.” Not low in meat altogether.

Human performance is predicated on nutrition as well as many other factors and protein is paramount. Much harder to obtain the required essential amino acids from a plant based only diet. Not saying Newton is injured because he doesn’t eat meat but we need to be careful when we say veganism is the best diet for “human health” and assume that also means “human performance.”

My comment wasn’t intended to say anything about Cam or suggest Watt is less than top flight, merely to support the idea top flight athletes need to consume a ton of calories to maintain themselves. Having zero educational background in nutrition besides having once stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, I avoid getting heavily involved in these kinds of debates because they aren’t areas I’m super informed about.

When you're rich like Cam I can guarantee you his nutritionists and dietitians will make any diet work to keep him in top playing shape.

Eh, if you’re supplementing the amino acids at the end of the day it’s still a supplement and not the real deal. It’s like saying “so and so has the best rehab team so they’ll be fine” which is obviously not always the case. The body needs what the body needs and I guarantee you his dietician has given him the essential amino acid lecture.

I’m not a full blown conspiracy theorist, but I don’t trust media in this new age. It’s not that these new studies can’t possibly be true. I’m just not easily convinced. I did a no meat diet for 3 months a couple years ago & felt amazingly great, just as advertised by others that live that lifestyle. After that I still eat meat but I don’t see it as a necessity like I previously did and I keep my portions to a minimum. So that experience mixed with the fact that more vegans & vegetarians (the numbers are growing by the day) means less American dollars being spent on meat. Imagine how much money that is. These “new”studies and findings are just fishy to me. Like this one for example

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/09/25/health/best-drinks-for-hydration-wellness/index.html

Exactly my experience too ...I’m about to turn 42, did years of high meat, protein diets during my 20’s and 30’s from a weight lifters mentality and I can say hands down after slowly cutting down meat and dairy, doing a 3 month plant based diet, and now working moderate amounts of meat and dairy back in I feel like I’m 25 again...it’s no contest really..I lost fat, gained lean muscle, and most importantly i feel great. I’ve been a massage therapist for almost 20 years and my joints and hands don’t hurt anymore. It really is amazing. People get to hung up on the all or nothing stuff. I’d suggest “fasting” off meat and dairy first. Don’t count calories on it, there’s no need. It’s actually really simple..then start adding in stuff you want to. I started with fish and eggs here and there (now eat them whenever I want)and still try to limit red meat , pork, chicken to 1-3 times per week. If you start feeling sluggish or had a weekend of cookouts and heavy meat then fast again, go all plant based for a week.  It’ll help you cut out all the processed crap too which is a big part of it.

Cam got beatup because of Ron or whomever’s insistence that DW can play left tackle when even he knows he can’t. That’s not on Cam. They’ll figure it out. I like what someone said about trading for a  vet LG or something to solidify that line. Little looks good over there, Motons a pro bowler...they’ll get it figured out the next couple weeks. Then the Return of Superman ha

I know this might anger upper management in this forum, but I feel compelled to warn others as well as our favorite QB Cam that his diet is not sustainable long term. I've known people in my life who were strict vegetarians and ruined there long term health. Veganism has become one of the most trendiest diets because of its ethical stance as well as it's "health benefits". The last few years many people have come adopted this diet to great success but only to find themselves ruining there health after many years of practicing this dietary regiment. It is historically a FAST!

While in the mainstream media, veganism is still trending upward, many people who have done the diet long term have been sharing their stories on YouTube. Young men and women who have made tons of money from this diet has had to admit to their audience that the vegan diet has caused many of their health complications. Just a simple google search of "ex vegan" shows you hundreds of videos and articles of people quitting because of this deficient diet. I'm not saying that there are no successful vegan. But there's certainly a lot of people who can't make the diet work even celebrities who have more financial resources than anyone can imagine. Why?

Yup I’m 36 and feel 26. I give all the credit to dieting how you just explain. Try different things and fasts then listen to your body
