i can't i was born into it.   also if you take some kind of solace at no violations after reading what was going on there i don't know what to say.  i lost tons of respect for that school.   dean smith's halo is gone from that place.  i think it went with him

Well, Dean wasn't clean either. That doesn't make him any different than many coaches of that time period or today. I am not a UNC fan but the one thing positive I can take away from Dean Smith as a whole is that his love for his players appeared to be very genuine. He treated them in a manner that most modern coaches do not.

That was my first reaction when the scandal broke “Would have never happened on Dean’s watch.” And I say that as a Duke fan. They might be rivals but anyone with an ounce of objectivity knows Dean truly cared about the young men he coached and wanted the best for them. It’s disappointing such things went on just as a citizen of the state that supports it.

Colleges are already under heavy scrutiny at the moment for their artificial inflation of tuition costs.

This is a symbolic gesture; legally the NCAA still holds the cards and can tell CA to kick rocks. Publicly, as this thread attests, most people feel like it's fair that the athletes are compensated.

Either way, the ball is rolling. This is an issue that has been criminally neglected by the Courts one way or the other because both sides have historically balked at bringing it into the courts.

And absolutely nobody was doing anything shady right? C’mon dude. Don’t act like your school is spotless and everybody else is cheating when you’ve got that in your past and you can’t point to anything remotely comparable at Duke. If that isn’t the definition of blind homerism I don’t know what is.

You up to date on the recent FBI stuff? Zion’s name is all over it and his link to Kansas. Georgia Tech was also recently handed some fairly severe penalties, including a 1 year post season ban. One of the level 1 infractions that occurred was an assistant GA Tech coach taking Wendell Carter to a strip club in Atlanta. Gee, these dook recruits sure are getting a lot of other schools in trouble. And I won’t even bring up the message board stuff about Zion’s school teacher parents living in a 1 million dollar home in Colvard Farms, and I won’t mention the very suspicious circumstances that certified rocket scientist Marvin Bagley was close to being ruled ineligible in high school because of grades but miraculously was able to get in together and graduate early and enroll early in one of the most competitive schools in the country. There was also the story that broke regarding Bagley’s family declaring bankruptcy then somehow being able to afford a very, very nice house in a gated community in Arizona while Nike basically laundered money to his father for being an AAU coach and “Nike consultant”.

and brah before you start crying “boUT dEm FAkE CLaSSus at UNc”  you may want to freshen up on this report conducted by OTL that examined duke’s basketball players, many of which were deemed academically insufficient, being steered towards certain classes to remain eligible. Sound familiar? https://nypost.com/2002/03/01/whistle-toots-on-academic-fraud-div-1-hoop-grad-rates-a-scam/

Duke basketball is as dirty  as they come.

How much should a male basketball player make?  How much should a women's basketball player make?  Football?  Water polo?  M/F soccer?  Baseball?  Softball?

If there is any college-affiliated stipend, or payment, or funneled endorsements, there will be Title IX implications that will govern equality.  You want to get paid and you're of college age?  Go professional.  No one makes anyone go to college.

Oh boy this is so rich, I had to come back for seconds.

a duke fan lecturing someone about “cheating” and how clean of a program dook runs is almost as bad as North Korea giving a presentation to the UN on human rights.

They can go pro straight out of high school?? That’s your whole point?

We already dictate this with professional sports. Not saying it's done the right way, but why does the fact that they're in college make any difference? You're dead on that Title IX is a major roadblock. A determination has to be made regarding what constitutes equality. Is it the market or is it some other moral impetus?

The suggestion about going professional ignores a reality we've cultivated for years with professional football. The NCAA is the NFL's farm league. It's not a real choice because guys do need time to develop. People were worried about 21 year old CMC running between the tackles. 23 year old CMC is driving linebackers into the dirt.
