A healthy Cam or CMC who do you resign?

The choice to me boils down to this.  Do I pay the best offensive player and quite possibly the best on the team at age 24 or the former best player on the team who has been injured and at age 30 for twice the price?  I chose the first option.

Keep drafting the next best player on the team and spend the savings on the trenches.

That's what I would do given the limited information in the op premise.

Clear.  Lucid.  Logical.   But this is the Huddle; you must not do that.

A few things to keep in mind:

1) the cap has increased at least $10mil each year the past six years

2) Cam’s cap hit this year is $23 mil, the highest paid QB (by Ave per year) is Russell at $35mil.

3) CMC’s cap hit this year is $4.7, the highest paid RB is Elliott at $15mil.

So worst case scenario might not be as bad as you think for a cap hit, depending on the structure and amounts guaranteed.

If the NFL tv money keeps coming in and increasing the cap each year, contracts will only get bigger and bigger.

After much thought...I think this is the crux of the issue. If Cam is healthy and we want to retain him hes gonna cost us a ton of jack. CMC who in my mind is the best player in the game is going to command the richest salary of any RB in history. I feel we can only afford to retain one of them. That is, if you consider the percentage of cap space signing both will eat up.

I think you've gotta go McCaffrey here.

If there is anything that this Kyle Allen debate has shown us...its that we can win a lot of games having a guy that can manage the game and let CMC do his thing.

Now if Cam was 26 we may be having a different conversation.

What do you guys think about having the ability to sign both? If we cant...who do you go with?

For me it's not much of a question at this point...but I'm curious to read all of your opinions on this upcoming decision.

Both can be and will be retained. New CBA will expand the possibilities greatly with more money flowing to the players overall.

We are where we are with Cam and his current health/durability concerns because we've ran him into the ground. We are currently trying our damndest to do that to CMC as well. He's playing 98 percent of the offensive snaps. I'm not in favor of paying anyone top record setting salary that might not be healthy enough to play a full season a handful of years down the line. Other teams in the league are showing you don't need to draft running backs high or pay them 80 or 90 million dollars to have a competent run game. It's a business at the end of the day. The same fans that adored Dave Gettleman for example for his ruthlessness in negotiating will sing a different tune with CMC.
