Dean Biasucci of the Colts (K, WCU) was a friend of mine in college in the 80s.   He had already signed with the Colts and was finishing his theater degree during the spring semester. 

I think it is interesting to see how kickers are being paid now compared to back then.  I am not sure if there was a minimum or what it was back then, but he told me this was his rookie contract (undrafted free agent):

1. Base salary $65,000.

2. $3000 per field goal

3. $500 per extra point.

I am not kidding.  I think he got a better deal later, but that was it.

Maybe a bit of luck but a bit of game planning as well. You have to decide to pick the right guy to come in to compete, give him opportunities and base your decision on his performance.,
