Maybe it's 3 dimensional chess where the secret plan is to soak all of his usefulness out of him during his rookie deal, then you don't even have to resign him beyond year 5 cause he's done. Think of it, you can save a ton of cap space if you just run your 1st round rb into the ground from the word go. 37 touches a game does seem like a bit much. I wonder if Ed will have a few words with Marty at some point if it persists.
