We need to extend Allen.

I wasn't talking about extending him after two games. Just this year. How many times have we just walked away from a great player because the price got too high.

Again, this thread is about three months early. If he continues to ball out, of coarse you make him a sort of lowball offer where we extend him early at a discounted rate. If he declines it you see how he plays again and repeat. If he declines again you go one more year and pay him real QB money.

On the flip side if he sucks it up against Houston and Jacksonville then everyone who is touting him looks silly for blowing him up after such little track record. I get it. We are all pretty excited to see quality QB play.

Signing a QB to a lucrative contract after 2 starts sounds like a Hurney 1.0 move if there ever was one.

Not to mention the eagerness to do this is strange considering the hand wringing I've seen about another contract for Cam.

If Kyle Allen is the guy, he will eventually be paid as a top quarterback if we want him. Somehow I suspect that suddenly won't be an issue at all to the penny pinching types who were clutching their wallets in agony at the thought of extending Newton again.

Huh? Never said I’d think about extending him now. No need. EFRA is like a team option at minimum. Allen is going nowhere for two years. All I was saying is that we don’t have him for 3 years cheap. That RFA tag won’t work if he’s truly a solid QB that can lead us to the playoffs. The first round RFA tag won’t dissuade anyone that needs a starting QB.

I believe I quoted the wrong person. My apologies!

@stbugs Heading into 2010 Matt Moore was the "starter"(jake wavied and pickles drafted) and given the 1st RFA. He started 5 games in 2009 and was the most likely "starter".

Romo got extensions during his early RFA/ERFA days. Jerry gave him the money up front with guarantees. Basically the same money as the RFA 1st, but sooner and part of it was guaranteed.

I can think of twice. Norwell and Norman.....though Norman was an unknown until his final year under contract.  Not extending Norwell earlier was Gettleman being a moron

Romo never played a down before his RFA year so not too surprising he wasn’t plucked for a 1st and a big deal. Moore is a better example but even then his own team picked a QB early in the 2nd in his RFA year so not a ringing endorsement for his future.

I’m not saying it’s a given that Allen gets a huge deal but that if we’ve moved on from a former MVP for Allen because he’s played that well, the. he’s going to get an offer and we won’t have a cheap RFA year in 2022.

Each have a value(Cam&Allen). I can believe all the talk about cutting Cam, LOL. I still need time, but there no way a 20mill Cam cannt have trade value. Teddy was traded for a 3rd, plenty of other examples. Its bizarre that Cams contract is/was both a bargain and cut-a-able.

I still say wait for things play out more, then wait some more. Only if Allens agent/group what to make a deal would I move. Panthers are the house and hold the cards. They have both Allen and Cam under contract for two years on the cheap.

That's what we already have

Again, I know that. So far Allen has shown to be a good backup for the time that Cam is out of action. What I was saying is that if he continues to do well, since we only have a small sample size for him right now, we aren't likely going to see any contract talks with him until his current contract runs out in the future or if we were to trade him somewhere else later on or so.

If he was smart and wanted to bet on himself he would not sign either.

On the Ross Tucker football podcast they interviewed Andrew Brandt who said that he is  Kyle Allen agent. If you have followed him at all over the years then you will know that his mantra is to try to get as close to free agency as possible.

Allen is not signing anything as long as he's playing well.
