We need to extend Allen.

He can’t even be a restricted free agent until 2022. We own his exclusive rights for the next 3 seasons and do so at the rookie minimum. Absolutely zero reason to extend him and waste cap space. For free agency purposes, he is basically a rookie.

He can’t be unrestricted until 2023, but we would definitely need to extend him before he becomes an RFA if he keeps it up. All we can do is put a 1st round tender on him and if he is a franchise QB some would happily give him a huge deal and give up the 1st to us. We could match obviously but then you are letting another team dictate the terms of the deal and it could be designed to make it prohibitive for us to match it.

I'm going to throw this here to make sure everyone understands:

These are the players with 2 or less seasons in the league, a status reserved almost solely for undrafted rookie type players. Once tendered they can only negotiate with their former team. The tender offer is only a one year non-guaranteed contract at the minimum salary level so most teams would use the ERFA designation on players who were on the roster late in the prior year and signed to a 1 year deal. Usually these offers are signed as soon as they are made since nothing is gained by waiting.

I'm saying it right now. No matter what happens with the Texans he needs to be here 3 more years. I love Cam but I love this team more and paying a now injury prone QB doesn't make sense. We could actually save money and use it to sure up our Oline. Letting Allen walk into FA would be a huge mistake for us.

No. We have him under cheap team control for the next 2 years on ERFA the RFA, and then could tag him. No reason to jump the gun whatsoever.

If this is true and Allen is the real deal we may have just had a franchise defining and changing moment. Having a legit franchise QB making UDFA money for 3+ years is a tremendous advantage over the rest of the league. And as much as people might think otherwise, Cam will have trade value after this season—relatively cheap deal that can be gotten out of easily and he’s a former MVP who has struggled with health. Teams are QB desperate and I could see one throwing a 2nd at us for him. We really need to hope that Kyle Allen is the savior and the greatest UDFA QB ever

If he plays like this moving forward he’ll get more expensive each week. Agreed it’s premature but even if he’s only a backup moving forward he’s shown his worth.

I like him better than that dude filling in for the Jets right now. Better than Fitz, better than Keenum currently, hell I wouldn’t take Trubinsky over Allen right now.

You don't extend a guy based on one (or two) games.  Allen will (apparently) have plenty of time to show us who he is with Cam out.  If we hit the bye at 3-3 or 4-2, I can understand how it might be in our best interest to extend him.  However, by the same token, if we are at that point, why would *he* want to do that?  Why wouldn't he instead opt to wait it out and get paid?

Now, if Kyle Allen has us at 4-2, I fully expect him to remain the starter for a while.  As such, if he then navigates us to 11-5 there should be serious conversations at the highest levels about whether or not we continue with Cam.  Not because I want to see us dump Cam, but you don't pay Cam 30-40 million per season when you've got a guy 7 years younger who can get you to the playoffs.

Bear in mind, we have three ROCK STARS on offense right now who will want to be paid over the next five years:  CMC, DJ & Curtis.  Assuming they continue to develop, there's 30 million per season right there if you want to keep all three, maybe more.

Jimmy G got a 100 million dollar contract off of what, 4 games?
