Wildcat...Its only the beginning!

I was just watching UNC play VT and was really impressed with the UNC offensive gameplan. I like a lot of the formations and motions that there offense incorporated. I'll be honest with you I would much rather have UNC OC then Davidson at the time being as I have always really like an OC who had the creativity and balls to call a game like that even if it didn't always produce big results. It got me thinking with the success of the wildcat why don't more NFL teams try to run a few of those traditional college formations and plays.

Think about Dwill or Stewart in the Pistol or both of them in the Wishbone. Now don't get me wrong no NFL team can use either of these as a base O formation, more it could replace the Wildcat in an O that sucks at it. I think the Wildcat can only be successful with the right personnel and coaching to use it. I don't think we have either. But some power runs out of either the Pistol or Wishbone or even just the Jumbo would be right up our power run blocking lines alley (literally) .

Wildcat is an anomaly. Normally most college type running plays never work in the nfl for the simple fact that nfl defenses are much too fast and have way too much time to view film and tendencies for these type of trick or illusion plays to work more than once of twice.

Hell the Wildcat is a bust on many levels as there is only one team that is running it efficiently.

NFL is a career and college football is a hobby. The amount of time players have to put in at college is much less than the nfl, thus coaches have a bigger input than the players themselves in college and those little trick plays work alot more.

I believe one of the Lombardi trophy's in Pittsburgh beg to differ. Those trick plays were instrumental in there win over Seattle. Its all about confusion my friend. The more confused the D is the more likely they are to make mistakes.

After GT creamed VT. They're just took advantage of VT's youth in the defense and their inability to stay in their lanes and keep containment. Awful game. I was there, and being a hokie fan, the highlight of the evening was people making paper airplanes with their tickets and trying to get them to the field. 6 made it by my count. Countless tried.

As a student at UNC, I can safely say that you need to watch more Tar Heel football if you think John Shoop is a better O-coordinator than Jeff Davidson. Shoop is a conservative run-on-first-and-second-down playcaller who relies too much on an average quarterback in third-down situations. Our defense consistently bails us out and our anemic offense has been the primary culprit in our losses to GT, FSU, and UVA. Our trick play formations are too predictable, and on two of our attempts tonight we were penalized before the ball was even snapped.

Our offense showed promise tonight and I appreciate your confidence in Butch Davis' coaching staff, but to say that an ACC coordinator whose offense ranks in the lowest 15% of NCAA offenses would be an upgrade over Jeff Davidson is absurd. Don't forget that under Davidson, we had two backs top 1,000 yards rushing with one leading the NFL regular season in touchdowns. John Shoop is a college assistant for a reason; if he were truly as talented as you make him to be he would be calling plays on Sundays rather than Saturdays.

And furthermore, don't forget that the last O-coordinator the Panthers ran out of town experimented with the Wildcat here long before he brought it to Ronnie Brown and the Dolphins. DeAngelo took at least fifteen direct snaps in our win over Atlanta several years ago

If our team had let let him develop it like they let him in Miami, by getting the right players and enough snaps in practice, it would have been sucessfull here (for however brief). The Wildcat help turn around a 1-15 team to 11-5 in one year. I really don't see it be effective for much longer as D's find ways to stop it. But if we stay ahead of the curb by coming up with a creative power run formation it could be special. I like to think outside the box as many probably have noticed.

I think that the Wildcat seems to be a legitimate offensive formation and that it will not disappear and will in fact be refined and become a staple in the future as more and more fast, athletic quarterbacks (Vick/White types) eventually enter the NFL.

He actually took 11 direct snaps.

That game should be emblematic of how we need to play right now. Then and now, we've have quarterbacks who seem unable to make plays. We ran twelve straight run plays to start that game, and while I know the Cardinals have a good run defense, we've got to get back to our bread and butter.
