They Were Right

For years, we Panther fans have been a proud bunch in defense Cam Newton from the slightest criticism of his passing ability. Consistently talking about how Cam's running is more a product of his passing prowess rather than his ability to pass is significantly assisted by his ability to run. Kyle Allen, once again, showed us what a pure pocket quarterback looks like in a Norv Turner offense. Yes, we played the Cardinals. However the Cardinals looked a lot worse yesterday than at any point in the preceding two weeks, even in their worst spots against the Lions.

My take on this is that you let Cam rest until you're certain that he's healthy, and even then, you don't bring him back if Allen is still playing well. Is this Cam's team? Yes. But Allen showed what many of us had hoped to have seen from this offense since the announcement of Turner's hiring was made.

If Cam can't make the anticipatory throws needed from a QB who can't run as well, he needs to sit. If the Panthers don't plan on incorporated Cam's legs back into the game, he needs to sit. If Cam can't move around the pocket and take advantage of bootleg plays to move the pocket from pressure, while accurately reading the field, he needs to sit.

Is Allen the long-term answer? No one knows. But I do feel that without Cam's ability to run or at least be a threat to manipulate the pocket with his feet, he is a bottom 16 QB in this league.
