Does anyone know off the top of their head if you can use the 5th year option if you traded for a former 1st and claiming him off waivers?

I mean you pick up the contract, but wondering if you can exercise that option?

I would think yes but I haven't looked it up.

My understanding is, if you pick the player from the waiver wire, the contract is intact, so the ability to exercise the 5th year option would also be available.

So, it seems we have two different answers.

Reason I was asking, if you had the option of the 5th year, that would make this even more enticing, although that 5th year would be really expensive.

Either way, you may get a decent DE on the cheap for a couple years, with something to prove.

Desperate for a DE and in love with those measurables. There's no doubt about the guy's raw talent. There's also no doubt about him never living up to his potential on the field.

So he's Vernon Butler at DE.  I mean . . .

Only the team that drafted him.

I don't think this is true. Eli Apple was traded from the Giants to the Saints before a decision on his 5th year option was made. New Orleans then declined to exercise his 5th year option.

Now, maybe waiver rules are different, but if you pick up a player off waivers, you are picking up his contract, as well, so I would expect the option to be intact.

Taco actually had the measurables to support the fact that he was an elite raw talent. The Combine exposed Butler as a JAG, Gettleman just completely disregards workouts. That's how we ended up with Butler, WRs that can't separate, and DBs that can't run.
