Brian Hoyer isn't great as a starter because they don't let him run the offense that suits his abilities. There is something to be said for his time in New England and how he looks when running that offense. I imagine is Josh McDaniels took that offense to the Colts, and Hoyer was starting, they would be humming along.

However, Hoyer as a back-up is more valuable than Kelly. There is a reason Kaep hasn't been signed as a back-up and it's not because he kneels for the flag. He has nothing to provide. A back-up helps the starter prepare by collecting materials, studying film, studying the offensive game tape, and providing insight when the defense is on the field. Kelly doesn't have the experience in the game to do much more than watch and develop. They aren't developing him to start for the Colts, he doesn't provide the back-up role needed, so why would he want to hang around?

The cultural mindset of "wait your turn" is going away, and thank god for it. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed, and if you have the ability and have shown that, and there are opportunities elsewhere to provide you the visibility needed to show the skills you have, you take them.

Good for Kelly.

LOL! You're talking like this guy has proven something. He's appeared in exactly one NFL game, never thrown a pass in an NFL regular season game, and has one rush for -1 yard to wrap up his career stats. The only thing he's proven is that he's an idiot loose cannon who is highly likely to do something stupid to either get himself suspended and/or otherwise disrupt the team.

Yet sitting at a bar getting drunk with strangers would generate zero snarky comments

It just seems highly sophomoric to brag about getting high with stranger for a month. I'm glad more states are legalizing because we're honestly getting tired of babysitting amateur hour "marijuana tourists" out here.
