Jake's 2008 WR corps with Moose on the back end of his career, DJ Hackett, and a still in his prime Steve Smith blows away any group Cam has ever had.  Hell Hackett might even be a starter on this team.

Even then that 2008 corps was probably only the second or third best group Jake played with in Carolina.  Obviously 2003 (prime Moose, ascendant Steve Smith, veteran Proehl) was the best, and I think you could make a case for 2004 (All Pro Moose, Keary Colbert's only good season, Ricky Proehl) or 2005 (All Universe Steve Smith, Proehl) being better than 2008.

Or what about Steve and Keyshawn Johnson in 2006? He wasn't popular but Keyshawn still had 70 catches for 815 yards that year.

the board right now is exactly how thisboardrocks was when jake was going downhill.  i was one of the ones holding on to jake because of how magical '03 was.   i was at the cardinals playoff game when he threw 5 picks.  people who came to fandom after that period are as emotionally attached to cam as we were to jake.  race has nothing to do with that.  i haven't been as emotionally attached to players since then because i figured out they get traded, cut, injured, or the wheels come off at some point.  gotta enjoy it when its happening.  nothing lasts forever.  i have no idea if this is the end of the cam era.  i really don't.  it sure seems like it is, but maybe its not.   just saying we've been thru this before and its not race related (for most), its just a little easier than the first time.  i'm guessing people who were this involved when beurlein was here went thru it with him too, and that made it easier for them to let go of jake

Never thought about it that way, but I think you are correct.

Whatever made you become a fan of the team you love/pull for probably tugs at your heartstrings more than it should.  I have a hard time dealing with folks that don't look at football teams with a very logical lens vs. emotional one....maybe that's what I'm missing.

The deflated feeling after those players leave/break/go crazy kinda turn you into a team fan instead of a player fan.

I disagree.  It's a results based league.  I'm not making an argument about the potential either player has or doesn't have.  Only the results they posted.

Discussing the surrounding players is a circular discussion at best.  If great receivers are all you need, why haven't the Cardinals been perennial contenders?  They employ one of the greatest to ever play the game.  What about the Lions in the Megatron years?  If great QB play is all you need, what about the Saints with Archie Manning?

Trying to compare two players is really only fair when you look at the results.  The surrounding players and situations simply bring too many subjective factors into the equation.

Results are solid points of comparison.  They are objective.  Objectively, Cam and Jake are the same player.  Obviously, they are different with different skill sets and surrounding cast, but in the end, you can only compare their results objectively.

hahahahahaha holy crap this is next level ignorant. In a sport where context matters more than anything, this guy seriously says that you have to take all context out and just look at W-L records. Great analysis bud. Keep up the good work

This is a ridiculous take if I’ve ever heard one. Jake was a good player for us, but never had to shoulder the load that Cam did and played with loaded offensive supporting casts, particularly the Super Bowl year. Most of the gameplanning revolved around him NOT having to throw the football (I.e. the nfc championship when he completed 9 passes). Compare that to Cam who was asked to fuel the running game AND beat teams with his arm and it’s just not close.

Yet it is factually correct when viewed through the lens of wins/losses/playoffs.

I know u dont like it but it is correct.

PS...if Cam really is leaps & bounds better as a QB than Jake,  he shud be able to produce more with less (and I dont believe the discrepancy in resources is as grave as you).

You know at heart that these people aren't arguing in good faith. The truth is that these guys can identify with Jake Delhomme the fiery underdog, whereas they can't see themselves in someone like Cam who doesn't adhere to their standards of how a quarterback should play, act, or dress. It's comical.

This is precisely why “training camp MVP” is such a useless statement. Does anyone remember one just one time a player that was a training camp star in the Rivera era actually turned out to be a stud during the regular season?!

Remember a few years back when Armanti Edwards was setting the world on fire as a WR during training camp?!  Infact, at this point under Rivera, I take it as a curse to be “training camp MVP.”

I dont remember the last time a training camp MVP got a real shot at seeing the field.

Jake also bagged 4 road playoff wins in less than 24 months.

...and a hellaciously good performance in Super Bowl 38.

But after that Cardinals game...yeah.

It's taken time, but I feel like I've learned to take the emotion out of my football analysis. And one of the biggest parts of that has been learning not to expect happy endings.

Very few long NFL careers end in the proverbial "blaze of glory". The vast majority of them end with older players trying to eke out just one more season or one last shot at a trophy while basically looking like shells of their former selves.

Of course, you can always hope that your favorite player goes out on top. But if you expect it, you're probably setting yourself up for disappointment.

So in the end, though I'll be sad if Newton's career doesn't end on a high note, I won't be surprised. Same goes for Kuechly.

The fact people are comparing Jake and Cam is a deeper tell. Good old boy bullsh*t is alive and well in this fanbase.

They’re the only two good QBs we’ve had. Who else are we supposed to compare?

Very different guys who got similar results. It’s an interesting topic. It’s not racist to discuss it.

    • If we don't switch it up and start playing full court pressure D we're just going to have to shoot lights out and have the other team have an off night to have a chance against top teams. We've trailed by 20 in three of our four games and ended up getting back in them by picking up the pressure. This team has to pressure and create pace because we don't have the post presence to play half court ball on either side of the court.
    • Would love to see us sign him to say a 4 year extension structured in a way that pays him most of the money in the first two years with an out after the 2. It protects us to injuries or penalty issues, it gives him a lot of money, and it also gives him an ability to renegotiate in 2 years if he plays at a high level, and if he does, we'd be happy to pay it to him again.
