the board right now is exactly how thisboardrocks was when jake was going downhill.  i was one of the ones holding on to jake because of how magical '03 was.   i was at the cardinals playoff game when he threw 5 picks.  people who came to fandom after that period are as emotionally attached to cam as we were to jake.  race has nothing to do with that.  i haven't been as emotionally attached to players since then because i figured out they get traded, cut, injured, or the wheels come off at some point.  gotta enjoy it when its happening.  nothing lasts forever.  i have no idea if this is the end of the cam era.  i really don't.  it sure seems like it is, but maybe its not.   just saying we've been thru this before and its not race related (for most), its just a little easier than the first time.  i'm guessing people who were this involved when beurlein was here went thru it with him too, and that made it easier for them to let go of jake

What was Jake’s playoff record vs Cam’s?

or overall?

This made me curious.

Jake regular season

Jake playoffs

Cam regular season

Cam playoffs

Cam and Jake are virtually identical in the RESULTS they posted.  Jake is 58.8% regular season win rate, Cam is 54.8%.  Jake is 62.5% win rate in playoffs, Cam is 42.8%.  Their completion percentages, QBR, you name it.

In terms of the success that each player brought to the Panthers, there is nothing between them.

Jake also had one of the better DLs in history on the other side of the ball, a first ballot HOF WR that MADE Jake Delhomme a household name, a good offensive line, and another solid potential HOF WR to boot.

Comparing Cam Newton to Jake effing Delhome is pretty laughable tbqh.

I loved how Jake wore his emotions on his sleeve.

He's nowhere near as athletic as Cam

He's nowhere near as physically gifted

He wasn't a #1 overall pick

But the guy literally gave EVERYTHING he had week in and week out.

In the past when the Panthers started off cold, I'd have faith Newton would lead the team back in it and take over, I don't have that faith anymore.

I've watched a 'hero' QB already succumb to injury and back then I was in my 20s and naive. As you get older, you understand mortality so I'm contempt that we have Clark Kent now, Superman left us Santa Clara

Jake Delhomme Hall of Fame Class of 2021!!!

I disagree.  It's a results based league.  I'm not making an argument about the potential either player has or doesn't have.  Only the results they posted.

Discussing the surrounding players is a circular discussion at best.  If great receivers are all you need, why haven't the Cardinals been perennial contenders?  They employ one of the greatest to ever play the game.  What about the Lions in the Megatron years?  If great QB play is all you need, what about the Saints with Archie Manning?

Trying to compare two players is really only fair when you look at the results.  The surrounding players and situations simply bring too many subjective factors into the equation.

Results are solid points of comparison.  They are objective.  Objectively, Cam and Jake are the same player.  Obviously, they are different with different skill sets and surrounding cast, but in the end, you can only compare their results objectively.

I think the wording you should be using is that their team's record is nearly identical and completion percentage are very close. But to suggest they brought the same contributions to the Panthers is outrageous.

Case in point: Cam is responsible for nearly double the amount of touchdowns in his career (240) than Jake (125) in only two more years.

Jake got a lot of grief from fans for taking risks with the football. That's pretty much it. Beyond that he was beloved for his down to earth attitude and appreciating the simple things in life. He was also widely admired for his "fiery" attitude on the football field. Which if you consider that through the alternate lens of hand wringing over innocuous things like towels on heads, celebrating "too much", or simply being too cocky, it's not difficult to see where the motivation for these attacks on #1 stem from. Especially now that you have random twitter users apparently waiting to snap pics of Cam in public and bizarrely use that as a means of questioning his dedication depending on whatever he was doing at that particular time. This is so far beyond football it is like nothing I've seen in sports. I thought burning jerseys was extreme and stupid. Whatever this is, it's gross.

Cam's also had D to C- tier receivers and F+ to D tier OL.

Jake's 2008 WR corps with Moose on the back end of his career, DJ Hackett, and a still in his prime Steve Smith blows away any group Cam has ever had.  Hell Hackett might even be a starter on this team.

Even then that 2008 corps was probably only the second or third best group Jake played with in Carolina.  Obviously 2003 (prime Moose, ascendant Steve Smith, veteran Proehl) was the best, and I think you could make a case for 2004 (All Pro Moose, Keary Colbert's only good season, Ricky Proehl) or 2005 (All Universe Steve Smith, Proehl) being better than 2008.

e: although iirc according to certain metrics Steve Smith actually had a historically significant season in 2008 considering how much the Panthers ran the ball, etc
