I Don't Recognize This Cam Newton

Regardless of his diet or lifestyle choices, I'm not a fan of his current frame.  He looks frail and small, and I agree, he doesn't look like he can take hits like he used to.  But, as others have alluded to, I think what we're seeing is less about his frame and newfound lifestyle and diet, and more about the beating and illegal hits he took all the years prior.  Also, when talking about his diet, keep in mind, he was a pescatarian for years prior to becoming vegan, so although he was consuming great sources of protein, he wasn't eating steak and eggs as people keep recommending.

The Cam you see now is the result of having 3x more hits than ANY other QB in the league, getting ran into the ground because our FO and coaching staff couldn't field him a competent o-line or running game, and the NFL letting defenders tee off at Cam's head for a whole year, not because he is vegan lol

The idea that you have to be all-in with one player—even when he’s performing poorly—just so you can cash in that chip with the Fan Police once his performance improves is a childish way of looking at things.

If a player is not playing well at the current moment, and your analysis is that he is largely responsible for his own bad play, you have every right to not appreciate his work in that moment.

I try to take a different approach. Since it’s a team game, it takes a ton of moving parts on each play to make everybody look good. So to say that one guy sucks, while the other guys don’t, doesn’t tell the entire story.

As for his diet? I can’t comment on that. He does what he does, and hopefully it’s helping him. I think this has more to do with the surgery, and the inability to get used to a new arm, so to speak. And I think his foot is a lot more weak than anybody wants to say. I can’t think of any other explanations for the lack of running, the lack of explosiveness, and the lack of velocity.

The biggest thing for me when watching Cam now is that he just doesn't seem to have the same fire that he used to have. I wouldn't attribute it to diet, and I don't pretend to know all the reason(s). I do think the efforts to keep him in the pocket result in loss of engagement from him on the field. He has always been energized by being active, by being a play-maker/a creator on the field. With that mostly taken away, it seems like he feels neutered to a degree. Just my take.

Cam Newton fans are Russell Westbrook fans. Proof has no value. They believe what they believe.

— Colin Cowherd (@ColinCowherd) September 13, 2019

Cowherd suggested that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is better than Newton, noting Newton has lost eight consecutive starts while Prescott has won nine of 11.

“Folks, Tampa Bay didn’t have a Pro Bowler on defense last night,” Cowherd said. “Carolina was at home. They had to win. Cam was 0-for-3 in the red zone; abysmal on third down, 3-for-14; 24-of-50 (passing overall) Couldn’t extend drives. Carolina’s defense is shot by the fourth quarter. You don’t want to pay Dak Prescott and you keep telling me that Cam’s a star. Today, Dak is better than Cam.”
