Eddie Money -- the '70s and '80s hitmaker known for "Take Me Home Tonight" and "Baby Hold On" -- has died ... TMZ has confirmed.

The singer died Friday in Los Angeles. His family said, "The Money Family regrets to announce that Eddie passed away peacefully early this morning. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our loving husband and father. We cannot imagine our world without him. We are grateful that he will live on forever through his music."

Eddie made the stunning revelation about his diagnosis during season 2 of his reality show, "Real Money." As we reported ... Eddie got the heartbreaking news late last year during a routine checkup with doctors.

----------------------------------------------------------

On a personal note, my girl and I met Eddie in the mid-90's after a show we attended. We were just hanging out afterwards and he just showed up and was talking with us like another person in the crowd. Someone asked him for an autograph and he said he didn't sign anything unless he got paid for it. He & I got into a discussion about concert ticket prices, record/CD sales and the dying industry, etc. I told him I first heard his music while I was in Japan in 1979 and had 3 of his albums (yes, albums- and I still have them in my collection). A few years later, when my wife and I married, Eddie sent us an acoustic demo version of "Peace in Our Time," which was originally performed by Jennifer Holliday and Eddie covered it a few years later. That song ended up being our first dance at the reception. We saw him do a few shows over the years, one at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, and he remembered us, which I found to be pretty fugging awesome. Always had time to say hello and was just a pretty decent guy.
