Conservative play calling. I've followed the Panthers for years now so obviously it's nothing new...but last night especially blew my mind.

The first half we took [a few] more risks and scored 21 of our 28 points if I'm not mistaken. The second half, you would have thought we had a 40 point lead by the plays that were being called.

All I needed was at least a two-possession lead [in the 4th]...after that conserve all you want. Hell, hike it and sit on the ball! But being down by 8 points with a full quarter to play against a team that has gone 'tick for tack' with you the entire game HARDLY warrants conservative play calling.

Being conservative completely takes Steve Smith, Muhsin, and all our receivers completely out of the game. They might as well be sitting in the stands. Teams would kill for a player like Steve Smith and we play a whole half and barely use him.

And poor Jon Kasay...having to attempt an 800-mile field goal in the middle of a blizzard because instead of short passes we run the ball (not very successfully for 3 downs.)

Am I missing something? Someone please tell me I am, because I would really like to be enlightened. It's one thing to lose feeling like you did all you could to win...it's another thing to lose because you didn't use all you had.

I am not for conservative play calling. Blow it up. Score 40. Score 60. Score 80. This is the NFL. These are the best. If they get torched repeatedly so be it. You don't want to have 50 scored against you, get out there and don't let it happen. When you're in a fight, you don't go conservative. You finish it off. Either you can't get up or they can't.

Agreed. I understand it sometimes, but in most cases (last night especially -- with only an 8 point lead) I hate it.

The other teams wants to win too. We are a running team now, so it makes since to me, that you run the ball. Dwill has not fumbled all year. I'm not for conservative playcalling all the time. But, I do believe they should have pass the ball down the field a little more, especially when we had the wind. But remember that a stupid penalty by Smith, that took Kasay out of a comfortable FG. Even the stutter step would have hurt if the penalty hadn't happen.
