Bears vs Packers

I used to live in Vegas so heard a lot from oddsmakers on local radio. They basically say the best time to make money is the first week or two in the regular season since they can only guess what teams will be like based on prior trends. Of course, they win it all back and then some once they have enough data.

I could see that making sense.

It's gotten a lot worse since the new practice rules went in.

Hell, Week One of the 03-04 season had some amazing football games (ours obviously being one of the best).

Yep... teams coming into the season after enduring training camps where 2 practices a day and pads were commonplace certainly looked a lot more cohesive from the start.

It's incredibly hard to get offensive competence in week 1 when there is so little playing time together, especially in regards to the offensive line.

I have no doubt that it's better for the average player's overall health and longevity, but it now means NFL fans endure 5+ weeks of subpar product (and pay for it) before teams are really putting forth high quality.

I can think of no other sport that fans would support under these conditions.

But as long as the NFL's popularity and profitability continue unabated, I doubt anything changes.

Nagy called a terrible game. Green Bay’s defense is better, but they’re not that damn good. He did a really poor job with utilization in terms of Cohen in Montgomery. He also tried the whole Cordarrelle Patterson single back dive gimmick on a 3rd and short.

The last two games that meant something in the NFL were 13-3 and 10-3 games. At least in the Super Bowl, the patriots were absolutely dominant in man coverage and disciplined in the front seven.

To only have 15 rushing attempts in a 10-3 game is inexcusable. Zero attempt to establish the run with no excuse of abandoning the run due to playing from a significant deficit. At no point in that game was it not a one possession game.

If you told me a team had 45 pass attempts vs. only 15 rushing attempts, I'd tell you they got blown out. Just terrible game management.

Honestly, Nagy is starting to kinda look like a turd that got floated by Andy Reid. There are very legitimate criticisms of Reid as a head coach, but as an offensive coach (QB guru in particular) there's no questioning the guy. You can make a VERY legitimate argument that Andy Reid is the greatest QB coach in the history of the game.

The WCO is a timing offense. When nobody plays in the preseason, there’s no way to get the timing down. I think they’ll get better, hell I think everybody will get better around the league. But I wasn’t sold on his offense last year. Still not sold on it yet.

They ranked 21st in the league in passing last year. They ranked sixth in rush att, and the team gained nearly 2000 yards on the ground. 900+ of that (and 9 TD) was from the since departed Jordan Howard.

If they can’t find their running game before October, they can forget about it.

KC fielded one of the greatest offenses the NFL has ever seen last year while the Bears are still trying to find their footing. Yes, Mahomes is a special talent at QB, but Andy fuging Reid is a special talent as an offensive/QB coach too. Combine the two and you get last season's Chiefs' offense

I think the Bears simply overestimated Nagy's influence over the offense under Reid. Reid is always going to have a good offense and he'll make any QB look good. Damn, how many scrub QBs did he trade for 2nd rounders during his time with the Eagles?

Peterson has proven to be a much more effective disciple of the Andy way of doing things. I like their scheme. I like the principles involved in the WCO. But you damn well better be able to run the rock, with power. Every great West Coast offense team was able to do that.

The other WCO posers didn’t.

    • With a night to sleep on it I'm now firmly of the opinion that we keep letting Bryce improve the rest of the season and enter next years camp with 2 new additions to the QB room. One being a new veteran and the other being another rookie QB we can bring along slowly. If Bryce's ceiling is game manager so be it. In that instance it will be majorly beneficial to the team as a whole to have another QB waiting in the wings and use the other as trade bait. But we've got to be smart about this and think ahead. I cannot stress enough that we cannot again sit on our hands with the most important position. Meanwhile we've also been continuing to build up the rest of the roster in the meantime. Then maybe we will be ready to compete for the division and a playoff spot. That is the best path forward for this franchise given where we are and the mistakes we've made that should serve as a learning tool of what not to do.
