So I’ve been watching OTC pretty closely since cut day. There are 5 teams going to the season over the cap. Including two division rivals.

Could anyone smarter at the nuances football explain how this works and why it is allowed? Are they going to cut people before Sunday? Is there some clause?

Thanks,

~ H

It's also possible that those teams[ including the Falcons] have already made the moves they need to make and that OTC hasn't been given the info.

It’s been pretty up to date(I’m talking within minutes, hours at the most) since the cuts, trades, move making started happening Saturday. Could be though.

OTC is never perfect and is often be off by a little bit just because they can never really have all of the information. No team is entering the season over the cap, I will promise you that. The penalties are such that it is not something you would ever mess around with.

I like the site myself, and , If the transactions haven't been given to the league, OTC won't have them.

With the Falcons, they just restructured a couple of players to gain 5 mil in cap space, which OTC doesn't show. Also don't have the last two contracts the Falcons signed- Bryant and Smith.

Supposedly, that puts them in the black, just barely.

I was wondering this myself. Glad you asked the question.

NFL teams have to be under the cap the first day of the NFL year, which is in March.

That’s why I’m like why are teams riding “over” cap. It not being updated especially since poo died down makes sense. But once the (pre)season starts, OTC is at most a day behind the actual. Usually. I’ll take @KB_fan‘s numbers though. Always on point.

And they have to stay under the cap for the top 51 all the time. The league has to technically approve every contract and they won't approve a contract if it puts you over the cap. So you have to have make the corresponding move to compensate for a big new salary if it puts you over the cap before you can ink the contract. At least that has been my understanding.
