Well, you have to promote your brand. I’m certainly not gonna argue that. Packer did that every day.

To a point. I always felt like Packer overdid it.

I know guys like Stern and Imus used to get interesting people on their shows and then talk about themselves. I found that pretty boring.

I guess the formula for me is that if I'm listening to sports radio, I'm interested in hearing about the Panthers. As good a radio personality as some of these guys may be, there's nobody there interesting enough that I want to tune in every day and hear all about them for three or four hours.

Gerry? Yep.

In fact, he’s another guy I listened to religiously. I can’t even remember if his content was that great or not, I was just a dumb teenager. But he was the voice of our postgame rides back to Greenville SC after those mid/late 90’s home games. He definitely projected well over the air.

My old man new Gerry pretty well back when dad did afternoons at WSOC-FM. Brett McMillan, another voice you might recognize from the Panthers circuit, was also one of dad’s buds. Paul Schadt, whose nephew DJ was the PD at FNZ a while back, was dad’s co-host.

Radio life. A lot of stories.

Gerry!

I listened to his afternoon show when i went in early to deliver pizza. I can't remember if he was that great at sports (probably was) but he was hilarious.

I don’t know much about their lineup. I’m out of market, so I don’t get to listen to their shows. In fact, I try to avoid sports talk radio for the most part. I’ve been around the radio business since I was a toddler. It hasn’t changed for the better, in many ways.

I interact with the FNZ guys on Twitter, and they seem like decent fellas. I don’t much of anything about Garcia’s situation.

If you want to check out WFNZ you can get them on Radio.com

These guys have to make their mark.

Now, you have the hired guns that do postgame shows (Rick Benjamin, McMillan, etc). They have more of a straightforward, reporting, almost an anchor-like approach.

It’s rare to find a show in which the host isn’t going to make at least 50% of the show about themselves and their life. Self awareness is key. It’s important to self-scout (airchecks) to be sure what you’re talking about (the personal stuff) resonates with your core audience. And it’s a delicate balance, knowing when to pull back the reigns on the self indulgent stuff, and swing it back to the sports analysis.

Otherwise, it turns into a dude in his mom’s basement ranting.

My best advice to any young sports talker (passed down to me from one of radio’s most accomplished programmers, Buddy Scott): Be the least funny guy in the room. Be the dumbest guy in the room. Surround yourself with funny people with a quick wit, proper timing with a good dose of self-awareness. Surround yourself with smarter people than you when it comes to analysis.

Don’t be dumb, and don’t be afraid to be funny. But know your limits.

Perhaps your strong sense of justice would be better served if you focused on the victims.

God promises to administer justice to all who have been mistreated or abused (Exodus 22:22-24) and ultimately offers them everlasting comfort and complete emotional healing that no human court can provide (Revelation 21:4).

He was innocent. Judge ruled that she lied. Case was thrown out. I believe in helping victims, but he was the victim in this case.
