What is benefit to team of not designating return?  No cap savings I am aware of?

If they designate return he can replace Slye if that experiment goes badly or trade him.  If he can't go he moves to IR then.

In order to designate him to return he would have to make the 53.  Potentially letting someone they want to keep get snatched by another team

If they kept gano and Ired him so he might return he has to be on the initial 53 roster first. Looks like they decided to use that roster spot for someone else
