Gano could possibly go to IR per Rodrigue

A team would be willing to trade for either kicker IMO, so the trade deadline piece is interesting.  A team like the Bears would be fine tossing a pick our way despite the 3-4 million price tag Gano carries if they think he's the answer to their kicking woes in a potential contending year for them. If he sucks, cut him and they'll owe 4.5 in dead cap over the next two years...not a deal breaker I don't think. 

Or we trade Slye at that point for (hopefully) a higher price.

  If we wait until then, we will have to pay at least the 1M guaranteed on his 2019 salary. To get to that 4.5M, he would have to be traded before the season. So it’s back to 5.6M.

There really isn't a team foolish enough to trade for Gano. Sending him to IR this early with a nagging injury and the fact he will be 33 next year speaks for itself from a business standpoint. There are a lot of red flags here. Even if the Panthers move Slye for a late pick, what if next year is another repeat of the same dilemma if Gano is sidelined with another injury? At this point it's getting closer and closer to a simple matter of one or the other. If we ship off another young and talented player to go do well for another team, we might as well just shut the lights off. What are we even here for? Certainly not winning.

Lord knows there are some lousy GMs in the league, but I don't think anybody's quite so dumb as to give up a draft pick for somebody they're not going to be able to use until eight or nine games into the season, if that.

Gano could be traded after he comes back from IR. He could come back before the trade deadline assuming he gets healthy. I agree that no one would take him right now.

I made the point in another thread but it will only save us $1 million this year to cut Gano. What are we planning to do with an extra million at this point that would be more important than having some insurance in case Slye doesn't pan out? Let's not forget that he still has never kicked a fg in the regular season. I'm hopeful but I think it's prudent we at least have a backup plan.
