"Cam Newton is Overrated" - Stephen A Smith

Do people even know what the word "overrated" means? If anything, Cam has been underrated his whole career. At some point throughout his career, he's been rated under Ryan Tannehill (LMFAO), Marcus Mariota (LMFAO), RGIII (LMFAO), Luck (LMFAO), Wentz (LOL), Stafford (LMFAO), Dalton (LMFAO), etc. Even this year he's being ranked at like around 15. and you cannot tell me there are 14 other QBs you would rather have than Cam. ESPN telling SAS to yet again push the "Cam is overrated" narrative.

i watched it while working.  he wasn't dissing cam really.  his only deal was getting his completion % up.  key and max let him know shula was a joke and its no surprise his #'s went up with norv.     it was all bs.  we all want his completion % up.

60.8% completion Andrew Luck was a generational talent.

59.7% completion Cam Newton is inaccurate and overrated.

Throw in the context of Luck routinely had 40-50/yr. more targets to his RBs than Cam until CMC. The Panthers were usually at the bottom of teams using their RBs as pass catchers until 2017..

I used to use this all the time when debating Cam/Luck. You have to let the other person just keep arguing Luck’s superior accuracy, then pop the actual numbers on them. First reaction is usually disbelief that the info is real. After that, they really don’t know where to go.

  Plus the Shula effect.

Someone give daddy the cliff notes I'm not listening to 7 minutes of that buffoon.

His entire argument was that outside of year one and last year Cam has been a below 60% passer.  Ignoring that hype other half of the equation (the WRs) have been trash most of his career and Shula was one of the worst OCs in the history of the game. Keyshawn pointed these things out, but Smith pretty much ignored it

Thats an interesting list of QBs. Strafford and Luck are better passers based on stats. Wentz hasnt played enough to assess career wise. The rest are just a bunch of average guys who have never been much. The only one left who had any expectations is RGIII but we all saw that one coming. So Cam SHOULD be way better than those guys if you believe Cam is a tier one QB

I would have loved to have a shot at him on this. I suppose 2013 never happened? Completion % is highly overrated as a tool to evaluate a QB. It’s more an indicator of offensive scheme and philosophy than QB skill set.

Cam won a near unanimous MVP in 2015 with a 59.8%. How important can it possibly be...LOL

With half an arm for half the season, Cam put up a 67.9% for a career high by far. Was he that much better or did we fire Shula and unleash CMC.

Yep. Completion % is the biggest load of sh*t when it comes to trying to say which QB is better. It leaves out so much information. How many are throwaways? How many did the WRs just not get open? How many were to stop the clock? How many were drops? How many were rushed throws? Was it just a bad scheme?

In ONE year of Norv (like you said), Cam had by far his best completion % of his career. Why? Did Cam just magically become more accurate? No. It's because Norv is an actual OC that can scheme WRs open and also gives Cam security blankets when things get tragic, something Shula knew nothing about for 5 fuggin years (which Cam had to endure). Not to mention he's had to deal with 3 of the WORST o-linemen I've even seen. Nobody wants to bring that up, it's always the same "durrr CaM iS InAcurite" bullsh*t. Really pisses me off tbh

Matthew Berry, the fantasy guy at ESPN, told a story in one of his columns about one of the first times he did a show for ESPN, I think. He and a former player are rating players.

The former player praised the first player they were going to discuss, Berry then agreed with him, saying the player was going to do great. The producer stopped the tape, and  did a retake. This time, the former player trashed the player, while Berry kept his same take.
