If you are David Tepper and Ron Rivera ends the season.....

Turner hasn't been as good as he was when he signed, and he shouldn't be excluded from the conversation about how bad our O line is.  McCoy is a 1 year rental, Poe will be cut after this season, KK may be asked to take a pay cut or be cut after this season, Irvin is a 1 year rental.  Addison could be cut this season, and likely will be after this season if not.

Olsen needs to head to CBS, and likely will.

If Ron goes, Hurney is certainly gone, and if we are in that situation I fully expect us to part ways with Cam as well.  We still haven't signed Bradberry, Thompson isn't signed, Williams isn't signed, Reid can be cut after this season,  Luke is here for at least 2 more seasons.

Maybe I'm looking at things a little differently, but there is a LOT of moving pieces here, and I'm not convinced that Ron and Marty would be able to make all this work again if we start over at QB and all of those pieces move on.

Almost all of your argument assumes the guys mentioned won't do well. Until I see how we do in the regular season I am not going to speculate using the chicken little point of view. There will be plenty of time for that if we suck. At this point I am going to stay positive until I have reasons to think orherwise.

Have you read the name of the thread you are typing in?

Three scenarios IMO.

1:  Cam's shoulder holds up, we make the playoffs, and win a playoff game.  Everyone starts talking extensions.

2:  Cam's shoulder holds up, we miss the playoffs, Ron and Marty are gone at the conclusion of the season.

3:  Cam's shoulder doesn't hold up, we don't make the playoffs, and Cam, Marty, and Ron are all looking for new jobs next offseason, and we likely tear down this roster and start over.

The likeliest of the 3 is the last one.  As Cam's shoulder hasn't shown to be able to take the rigors of the NFL regular season any longer.  And this coaching staff has shown you that they cannot win unless Cam is Superman.

And I think the first scenario is the most likely. Drinking the koolaid until it all gone.

What history are you using to make that assumption?

I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, I'm just looking at likely scenarios.  The likeliest is that Cam's shoulder won't hold up behind this O Line, and I have zero faith that this team can't win without a fully healthy Cam Newton.

If Cam's shoulder remains intact, we won't be looking at a rebuild, more of a re-tooling.

We haven't been able to trust that shoulder for a couple years now, and we still have a crap O Line blocking for him.

If Cam's shoulder falls off the deep end, then it's start over from scratch with a few players extended to build around.  Burns, CMC, Samuel, DJ, Moton.

Agreed wholeheartedly but I'm not confident we have much longer with Cam unfortunately.

i really hope that tepper has a higher standard than the one scenario talked about in the OP.

if we clumsily get to 10 wins and get our collective asses handed to us in the playoffs like we did in '08....we should absolutely see a major change.

that game was inexcusable.

if we get 10 wins but finish weak the 2nd half of the season losing more games than we win....time for a change.

really, i'm hoping that it would have to be a 10+ winning season and at least a deep run in the playoffs.

I look at it like this:

8-8 or worse record with a healthy Cam Newton= New Head Coach

8-8 or worse record with a banged up Cam Newton but the defense is top ten= Ron Stays

8-8 or worse record with a banged up Cam Newton but the defense is average or worse = New Head Coach.

Id even be tempted to cut bait with anything short of playoffs if we have a healthy Cam.

History only tells you where you were not where you are. I think Cam is healthy and as long as he stays within the framework of the offense and stops trying to be Superman and make plays that aren't there, he can stay healthy. The Oline will look much better if he concentrates on doing what guys like Brees and Brady do which is get the ball out quickly.

10-6 I think he stays, though I'd want him canned (and have for two years).

Also, sick of seeing people say "well if you fire him who are you bringing in?" No poo that the replacement could flame out, but that's never an excuse to continue with mediocrity. Every team that's ever fired a coach went into it knowing that the next coach could possibly be worse. They still do it because this is a win now league and in case you aren't counting Ron has had 3 winning seasons in 8 years.

Tell that to the Chargers when they went from Schottenheimer to Norv.

    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
