I'm a Good Person and I smoke Weed

Topical to Panthers due to both recent arrest of Cox and Long's mention of Eric Reid.  Good talking points here as states around the nation look at not just legalization but NORMLization of pot.  Big fan of Chris Long, so articulate and thoughtful but just a beast on the field.  So, does anyone really think that Cox is the only Panther to carry around a stash?  As Long points out, being tested for marijuana is a once per year window.  Totally not on par with random tests for PED's like Reid is going through.

Growing up (I am old) I always thought the incredible market value of hemp products would be the key to the legalization of marijuana.  Now it appears the opposite is true as the recreational drug use value of weed could (hopefully) open more market doors for the incredible value and variety of usage of the hemp plant.

talking points?

1) usage of weed in the NFL and specifically the Panthers?

2) legalization possibility in the Carolina's?

3) positives benefits?  (less usage of alcohol)

4) negatives (kills motivation long term or short term?)

5) how does our new owner view usage?  I think we all believe our old owner would have cut Cox on the spot.

When pot became legal in Colorado I visited my son there and it was amazing to see pot sold in stores.  Not similar at all to how I procured it in the late 70's thru the 90's.  Personally I stopped everyday usage a long time ago and not a fan of the high-strength stuff anyway.  But it is fascinating to me to witness such a taboo subject become commonplace.

In terms of the current CBA, it really doesn't matter.

In terms of the next CBA, I think there's a very good chance that marijuana gets dropped off of the banned substances list. It's one of the rare items that benefits both sides. Players want to smoke, owners don't want players sitting on the sidelines for using non-PEDs.  One of the only sticking points on the matter might be teams in non-legalized stares arguing that such a move would put teams in legalized states in a better situation to land free agents but that's just the way the cookie crumbles. The same thing is true for teams in states with no or very low state income taxes.

The biggest reason I'm for marijuana is so that it is regulated.  Unregulated marijuana is dangerous because people don't know what they are putting into their bodies.

The biggest reason I'm against marijuana is because we don't know enough about it's psychoactive reactions.  There are a lot of mental ill people in this country that might have adverse reactions to marijuana.

I would without a doubt, support CBD with low thc content(<5%) that is derived from the plant or hemp.

High strength THC weed is something that needs to be more closely studied to determine what effects it has on the brain.

Should be legal and allowed everywhere.

Yep, legalized and treated similarly to alcohol and tobacco. I've lived in CO for 13 years and the only thing that changed after legalization is that now instead of spending money on a failed effort to eradicate the state makes money in the form of taxation. Marijuana was everywhere and very socially acceptable prior to legalization and cops for the most part pretty much turned a blind eye to it in most areas. I was about to take a big old rip off a pocketable bong in a gondola at Keystone prior to legalization and had a gentleman speak up and kindly ask me to refrain. Kinda took me by surprise as that had never happened before and I was young and dumb (probably about 25 at the time), but then he proceeded to inform me that he was actually the sheriff of Summit County (the county Keystone is in). He said he personally didn't have a problem with it and had instituted a department policy to make marijuana the lowest law enforcement priority but since it technically was against the law he'd really appreciate it if I'd out that away in his presence. I appreciatively obliged.

This is something I would have scoffed at in the past but more studies are reaching the same conclusions.  Again the problem seems to stem from the high-potency strains.  Home-grown's alright with me.

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2019/03/19/704948217/daily-marijuana-use-and-highly-potent-weed-linked-to-psychosis

The study found that those who used pot daily were three times more likely to have a psychotic episode compared with someone who never used the drug.

Those who started using cannabis at 15 or younger had a slightly more elevated risk than those who started using in later years.

Use of high-potency weed almost doubled the odds of having psychosis compared with someone who had never smoked weed, explains Di Forti.

And for those who used high-potency pot on a daily basis, the risk of psychosis was even greater — four times greater than those who had never used.

Note to the NFLPA; Pease don't accept that in exchange for agreeing to an 18 game season.

In fact, don't accept anything in exchange for agreeing to an 18 game season.

Basically, just don't agree to an 18 game season.

Dont even, so its ok for mentally ill people to booze it up and beat the hell out of their partners and/or kids or drive and kill people, but a drug with calming effects which is much less intensive than being stupid drunk should not be allowed?

My concern is that the owners will overplay their hand. They know the players want it almost certainly worse than they do so they'll be looking for some type of concession from the NFLPA.

18 game season is just a matter of time.

Money talks.

@LinvilleGorge- my bad meant to quote you.

Yep. No way you can justify alcohol and tobacco, and not weed. When I hire someone I don’t even care if weed shows up on piss test. And they leave it at home because I let them do it on their own time.

What do they do in CO about people going across state lines? Always wondered how they dealt with that.

You can't be serious? You don't think there's enough research about THC and its effects? You've got to be fuging kidding me. It's one of the most studied naturally occurring substances in the world.

    • I know most of this place doesn't favor Bryce, so I'm preaching to the choir. Also - screw the Broncos and Peyton.   Okay, with that being said... Seeing what Nix has done this season is something we should all tune into.  Why?  His first two games were, well bad would be putting it lightly.  He looked in over his head, pro-level shocked, you could see the anxiousness.  He needed to settle down in the pocket and adjust to the game.  And you know what? He did just that.     And as the season has progressed, he has got better and better each week. All this through OL injuries and weapons like Sutton, Vele (who?), Lil'Jordan Humphrey (who?) & Mims, he has managed to ascend and bring himself into ROTY contention over Jayden Daniels & Brock Bowers.   And he's making advanced throws, layering in the second level, put them in position to beat KC the other week until the ST unit lost it. The short version of my point - Bryce's recent "progression" is relative.  This is the type of progression you would like to see as a season goes on and a kid gets adjusted to the pace of the NFL. Bo Nix Notable 2024 Stats (Through 11 games): 19 TDs (14 pass, 4 rush, 1 rec), 6 INTs, 2,275 pass yards, 295 rushing, 65.5% comp, 6.4 YPA Last 5 games: 10 TD, 1 INT, 1,193 pass yards, 115 rushing, 70.6% comp, 7.4 YPA
