He's returning from an injury and learning a new playbook while playing with an entirely new offense and QB in the most important position on the offensive line.

Most of the huddle agreed that under the circumstances of our previous center abruptly going on an emotional retirement tour that Paradis was the best case scenario given our limited options. It was that, Larsen, or a rookie. If ya'll want to blame anyone, start with Ryan. But he's suiting up for the Jets now. Cha ching.

Well he said he was retiring before the season started. A long time ago. He was a man of his word, even if it only lasted a couple of months. Either way this team had a contingency plan and that was Paradis. What happened to Ryan is besides the point. Paradis is here and at the current time, he's been pushed around a lot. The concern with signing him was his injury. This team could have just drafted a C as well. But as of now, this is what they got to work with. Ain't no one to blame but the front office. Luckily, there's time and if he's not playing hurt he should get it. Unfortunately, it's a huge concern if he's a liability in that line. The Line itself is shaky.

If it doesn't work out, it's pretty much a given it will be Hurney's undoing because that will likely mean we had another losing season. Both he and Rivera may likely be gone in that scenario. This has been an ongoing issue for years.

Either way the Panthers will be drafting another offensive lineman early in the draft in 2020. Unfortunately it looks like it's a rough time for a number of teams, the Panthers aren't alone in the offensive line struggles.

Offensive line has been terrible since the Super Bowl year.  Even that year they caught a bit of lightning in a bottle as Oher played well above his previous level and our rushing attack kept teams off balance.   Looks like this year is more of the same and we are going to see Cam getting killed and running for his life every third play.

New playbook, gelling, yada, yada doesn't explain getting thrown around like a sack of potatoes. He's getting physically manhandled. I was stoked for the signing, but I'm concerned with what we've seen on the field so far.

The explanations (or, if you're a pessimist, excuses) are all valid.

Unfortunately, so is the observation that he's not winning his matchups.

How he looks around week 10 is going to be the bigger issue than how he looks now. In time, he'll learn the offense and gel with his teammates. But the time that allows him to do those things will also come with wear and tear on his body (which has already seen its share of that).

The question will be whether the improvement outpaces the bruising, or vice versa.

This is what concerns me, as well. Paradis is coming off of injuries and it may just be a reluctance to go full force in meaningless pre-season games, but when an O-line looks bad across the board, it may be a sign that he's having trouble making the protection calls.

Of course, those protection calls might depend on who is at QB and what plays are being called, too. There's a lot of factors, added to the fact he's moving from Denver's zone blocking scheme to our more traditional one.

Still, the guy's got to get better quickly, we're running out of runway here.

Him returning from an injury is the biggest reason I'm not concerned.  He looks a little slow out there right now, but hopefully that's just him being cautious.  A guy with his record, there's nothing to prove in the preaseason.

It takes the o-line more time to gel than anyone on the field save maybe WR and QB.  Offensive lineman were hit the hardest by not practicing twice a day anymore.  It allowed them more than anyone to work on their craft.  There are so many techniques to fine tune as well as yes gelling with four other behemoths.  Also, we are not scheming yet.  There will be all types of nuances and adjustments to try to keep Aaron Donald and other good d-lineman in check once the season starts.

All that's valid, but you do also have to look at how each guy handles his individual matchups.

Pretty much everybody who's focused on Paradis so far has come away underwhelmed.
