Torrey Smith - Keep him or cut him?

We can save more by cutting Gano.

Unless its meaning keeping a a guy like Godwin off, I say hold onto him.

I was all aboard the cut him after last season and not start him last year.  But the guy is playing litterally for pennys and seems to actually be a locker room vet presence for the young group including starters Moore and Samuel

Yes, but you want to walk into Teppers office and tell him you just spent a million of his money for a guy to be in camp for a couple months?

Teppers hedge fund printed money because he knows that holding on to under-performing assets is bad business. He's the guy that rips the Band-Aid off fast and moves on to the next decision.

To answer the OP, I just don't see his value. He may have more tweets than yards this year.

I have no issues keeping Torrey Smith...

  • He vouched for Eric Reid as a former teammate in SF
  • Along with Kuechly he restructured his contract to help make room for McCoy

That is the kind of team / vet I'd want behind Moore & Samuel -- We've kept 6 receivers the last few years, I have zero issue if this is the final six.

Moore / Samuel / Wright / Hogan / Smith / Godwin

Guys like Aldrick Robison, Rashaad Ross, etc. don't bring anything particular to the table, Hogan is too new to the team to be the veteran voice in the receiver room in my opinion.

No we can’t. Cutting Gano costs 5.6M vs 1M(maybe) for Smith. Plus 2M more we don’t have to pay him.

  Cut Gano: -5.6M

 Cut Smith: +2(or 3)M

The team typically starts the year with 6 WR’s. Given the lack of innovation offensively (by design, I suspect) this preseason, I’m trying to be open minded about each of the bubble guys.

Moore

Samuel

Wright

Hogan

Smith

Godwin

I’m just riding with this for week one. Nothing has altered my thinking since camp opened. And While 11 hasn’t shined in the preseason, who has? Godwin in Chicago? Yes. On ST. Also muffed one in NE. Moore and Samuel haven’t been given the opportunities to flash, and NE and BUF played tight man coverage against both. Those were two great secondaries 10/12 faced.

Unless a more favorable option emerges in FA or via the upcoming wave of cuts, I don’t see anything changes. I think the team values Smith more than most fans do.

Spotrac says Torrey is 3 million, no dead space.  Not sure 3 million really buys us anything we need, except perhaps a roster spot.  That said, if it is the difference between keeping or cutting Godwin, I'd prefer to keep him.  At least he has some upside.  So far our "veteran presence" hasn't made our receivers anything more than crap this preseason, so I don't see the value.

If I was the GM, Torrey Smith would've been released as soon as I could've filed the paperwork with the league office after last season. Nothing personal, just not worth his contract and we have better, younger receivers who need opportunities.

Would you want Ginn if he no longer has the wheels to be a deep threat? Because that's basically what Smith is these days. A deep threat specialist who no longer has the wheels to do it.

I would have never traded for him or given him 5M for last year.

Make him a coach. They don’t count against the cap.

If Godwin was showing signs of being ready, sure.  But I am not seeing that from Godwin.  Devil's advocate:  Smith has not had a long ball throwing QB for very many games, and the long ball threat helps Smith more than most.  This preseason has not been good at the QB spot--

Having said that, we cut him if we need to make a move, but we do not cut him if we do not make a move.
