Gano might not kick all preseason

I hate when the Panthers have a choice between two players because over the years they've had a really unfortunate history of picking the wrong one.

Kerry Collins over Steve McNair...

Tshimanga Biakabutuka over Eddie George...

DeShaun Foster over Clinton Portis...

Jimmy Clausen over... well, anybody

And you could make a pretty good argument that Graham Gano over Harrison Butker falls into that category as well, especially when you look at it long-term and figure in the salary cap implications.

They've gotten saved by others a couple of times. They had David Carr rated higher than Julius Peppers, set Mark Barron higher on the draft board than Luke Kuechly and were prepared to take Laurence Maroney over DeAngelo Williams. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Hope they make the right decision here.

Welcome back man

We’re keeping two kickers this year and Gano getting cut is crazy talk. Coaches already said they wanted someone to take kick off duties away from Gano and they’ve done this before.

A couple weeks ago, the main reason given for keeping Gano was his ability on KOs. It was even said it was more important than actually making FGs and XPs on a consistent basis.

Now, he’s not even doing that? Unlikely.

If we keep two kickers again, people are gonna riot.

That and it didn't work the first time and this time it is an old and expensive Kicker that might not be healthy or a younger guy doing well but without the past production and who isn't as good as the last kicker we tried to trade unsuccessfully? I'm mean, is a 7th really worth it?

Keeping two kickers but putting Gano on IR is one thing. It basically postpones the resolution of the dilemma until mid-season, but at least by that time you'd have a better sense of what Slye is.

If he's bad, dump him. If he's good, keep him. If we're still not sure, well sh-t! :fear:

Keeping both of them on the active roster though? Maybe you get a good offer for Slye but we tried that bait before and teams didn't bite. Maybe they would now, or maybe they just sign somebody mediocre until we inevitably cut one of our Ks loose.

The worst part of that scenario for me is that it points to a desire to do anything possible to keep Graham Gano on roster whether it's the right decision or not.

Ding ding. I would still put money on Slye being the one on the block but we have seen some changes so it's worth speculating in this brave newish world.

I fully support the Gano to IR movement but a trade just seems silly when Gano can't even get out on the field once in preseason and other teams know we won't carry both forever. The juice doesn't seem to be worth the squeeze.

You can't go into the season with a kicker that hasn't kicked all preseason that has a "tired" leg as your starter

IR him roll with Slye, if Slye is getting it done during the season show Gano the door.

These are the no brainer decisions that New England makes with ease, and Carolina is utterly lost on.

Sometimes you have to look passed the human aspect get your hands dirty and just get it done.

Not saying I agree with their rationale, but get ready to riot.  I saw an interesting quote from Gano yesterday when asked if he was going to kick in the final preseason game and he replied something like, "the decision isn't up to me and ask the Panthers."  This seemed to imply that he wanted to kick and was healthy but the Panthers are holding him out.

Something odd is going on but I can't see RR rolling into this year with a rookie kicker with all the heat on the coaching staff.  Also, I can't see RR holding Gano out all preseason to showcase a rookie with the hopes of trading him for a 6th or 7th round pick.  This would be idiotic because late round picks rarely pan out and and I'd much rather Gano get reps rather than pick up a late round pick for Slye.
