If we're looking to keep 3 QBs on the 53 man roster...

It sure sounds like a lot of you have no faith in Allen, Grier, or Heinicke.

I can't say I agree with that sentiment, but:

What is your alternative plan?

Could we get Joe Webb back if Houston cuts him? Would Garrett Gilbert be an upgrade over Allen and Heinicke if the Browns let him go?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

To go back in time and fix it last season when we were loaded up on veterans and knew that Cam's shoulder was an issue.

Hurney deciding not to address the backup position at all, then throw a top 100 pick at it speaks volumes.  We just aren't a smart football team.

I'll jump on this grenade.

Based on past experience, skill-set, and ability, and EXCLUDING all off field drama - Colin Kaepernick would be an ideal BACKUP to Cam Newton.

He is Cam light. He is not nearly the passer that Cam is, he cannot make more than one read before having to run, but he has experience as a starter, and he has taken a team to the Super Bowl before.

Based on pure skill, experience, and ability on the field, Kaepernick is far an away the best option as a BACKUP QB. Would it be worth the Media Circus to sign him though? That's the question.

Again, I say this based purely on football ability.

I withheld that one because I knew it would quickly change the direction of the thread, but I think this is a legit possibility at this point.

I said in another thread that the last preseason game is meaningless. But for Allen and Heinicke, it could mean a whole lot.

In truth, I think we're more likely to roll with what we have in either Allen or Heinicke (I agree that Grier isn't going anywhere) or either someone like Webb if he is indeed cut. But Kaep would be an excellent option to bring in and start getting him familiar with things, just in case.

If Cam goes down I have little faith in the backups more than physically filling the spot. That's fine for me because I'm not trying to save my job. Cracka raises a good point for Ron and Marty who should be squirming at this point. If Cam goes down or is not available they still have to win, I'm not sure they get a pass like in the old JR days. They need to do whatever keeps us competitive. Yep, look everywhere.

We drafted Grier and I would be fine with riding him to see if he could develop but that is not a luxury those two should be able to afford, which I find funny because when he was drafted him it was seen as a move they had to do. Well they chose him, now play him if you must. Suck it up and fix it. That wont happen but as a fan I would be happy to go that route.

We could do far worse with Cam, Kaep and Grier in the QB room at once.

Far worse being an injured Cam, Allen, and Grier. Say what you will about the dude and his politics and agenda, but he's a better option as a back-up QB than anyone else available.

FA QB's available:

Brock Osweiler

Mark Sanchez

Matt Cassel

Landry Jones

Brandon Weeden

Kaep is a better option than them. You're lying to yourself if you say otherwise.

You have to be trolling at this point, unless you have secret tape of Kaep throwing passes or something.  I mean most guys in his position would at least go to the arena league or something to PROVE they still have something left, right?
