Are we still propping up John Matsko?

Our offensive line has never played a regular season game together. We have a new center, who just came off injury. We have an LT who was out all of last year with an injury. All of the guys on our line have played at a high level, just not together. Meshing takes time. I'll give them until the first quarter of the regular season. John Matsko is a good coach because he's made chicken soup out of chickenshit for us multiple seasons. Other high level players that go on to other teams cite him as one of their best coaches.

Bingo. The C is what I’m most concerned about, Cam just doesn’t play at as high of a level without Ryan there to manage block/blitz pickup. This is a huge transition for us. I hope we can work it out quickly once we get a regular season game or two.

I’m honestly not sure who’s calling blocking/Blitz pickup now.

They are able to pass protect, or run the ball down your throat at will.  Seemingly we can't pass protect, and we need our QB to be our 2nd leading rusher over the last 7 years.

Anything older than last year is irrelevant. Norv runs the offense not Ron and he does it his way. Stop trying to blame the offense on Rivera. He runs the defense

Cam looked good last night, other than when Manhertz TOTALLY whiffed on his block. I think people expected them to look like a cohesive unit after just spending training camp together. They're going to go through a trial by fire in regular season games before they fully gel. I think we have the pieces though.

This thread continues to prove he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Yes, it always the coaching fault.

Ignorance is bliss.

It's not "always the coaching fault".

Matsko has been praised around here for a very long time, I'm just asking the question as to why?  And should we continue to praise him?

We have had a poo O Line, outside of a decent 2015, for a very long time.  Yes, we can run.  Yes, we can score rushing TD's.  But we have to do it differently than everyone else in the league, and now the reliance on Cam Newton's body is haunting us.

Surely already been mentioned, but Matsko is also being asked to coach guys up in a system that may largely be outdated based on initial looks and Rivera's style. Ground and pound, deeper drops, etc. are going to wear an OL out a helluva lot quicker than short passes, dink and dunk, and the occasional deeper shot.

Honestly can't remember how the OL looked early last year, but I'll also hold out hope that we're striving for mediocrity and consistency, not greatness just yet. Keep Cam clean enough, let Norv open the playbook, and I do think we'll be getting the ball out faster and letting playmakers make plays.  Not panicking just yet...but it's obviously a stress because the season rests in the OL's hands.

He isn’t just respected in Charlotte, he’s respected around the League. Dude has had trash to work with for years and has made the line at least serviceable.

If he gets fired he’ll be working somewhere else very soon.

This is absolutely true.

He’s also the line coach that helped spark the greatest show on turf in 1999. He had the good fortune of Orlando Pace at LT, but still did a fine job with that unit. Did fantastic work with Baltimore under Harbaugh for a couple of years. Their production dropped to the middle of pack in 2010, and they canned him.

Hurney and Rivera were wise to scoop him up.

Ha, this is also true. Like I always say: Ron always blames it on missed opportunities and not executing but the Panthers lose games by one score often making a few mistakes. If the team was better prepared, a few mistakes a game wouldn't doom the team. Ron Rivera expects perfect execution instead of making adjustments to counter what the other team throws at him. It's happened his entire tenure here and was never more apparent than in Super Bowl 50 when the Broncos said they were ready for the Panthers and that they hadn't changed a thing.

Look, we can say that the problems in the past were due to Shula sucking(still Ron's job to replace him and that took forever) but once your bread and butter starts sucking(as the defense did last year) and you continue to play a conservative style with one of the most explosive QBs ever...you aren't good at your job.

Considering the intelligence level of our offensive linemen our O-line coach should be tarred and feathered (not literally). Trai Turner was blocking 70, knocked him down, and then walked away from him, let him hurt Cam, and he still thinks he's worth $8 million. His intellect isn't worth $8. Our O-line isn't intelligent enough to protect Cam, so if that falls on Matsko great. Fire him.
