F*** David Newton

This is not news here nor is it shocking that someone would have a negative opinion about our "favorite" ESPN beat writer but this asshat has to go.

His latest Twitter headline link to his new ESPN article reads:

Regardless of which side of the fence you sit on this is just trash journalism. I say it is trash because I have not heard from ONE, not ONE, Panthers fan who has had an opinion either way about what Reid said after the second preseason game against Buffalo. I follow a ton of you guys on Twitter, I'm here on the Huddle, and a 5 year member of the Roaring Riot. Haven't heard a fuging peep about this from fans. *So what is the overshadow exactly*?

David Newton in this article has CLEARLY written it for one reason and one reason only...FOR THE CLICKS!  He is a fuging hack. Just tired of his trolling bullshit.

I guarantee you the minute that Reid signed with Carolina David Newton became involuntarily engorged.

It frightens him.  Feelings without origin.  Bodily reactions reason can't control.  He drinks at night.  Sweating, staring into the lit screen in dark room.  Silence booms in his ears.  Ice dances in his drink from the steady shaking of his hand.  His mind, taxed and weary, pours over his hastily scribbled practice notes.

"E.R. playing well/Looks great"

The words don't even register.  Like lyrics from a forgotten song they loop.  Softly at first, they rise, taking over.  Now enveloped by the thoughts he finds himself dreaming of E.R....

"No!"

He startles too, spilling cheap whiskey on his dingy t-shirt.  He puts his laptop down, gulps down the glass and weeps softly till morning...

Your reaction to the post says more about you than it does him. Didn't read the article, but "Eric Reid's activism might overshadow excellent play for Panthers" is as objective a statement as you will find in journalism. The NFL has many fans who find the method of activism troubling and an affront to values they hold dear. Others love his activism for the values that they hold dear. However, by and large, the veracity with which Eric speaks can be off putting for many, as evidenced by his Eagles Pre-Game dust-up in 2018.

Thus, its plausible to assume his methods could put off others who otherwise support him. There are far more supporters of Jay-Z than there are of Reid. Jay-Z taking a different route, by investing and obtaining a seat at the table through that investment seems logical. Real football fans also know that Kaep as a back-up QB won't work for multiple reasons including offensive schemes and pay (Kaep turned down a contract offer from the Seahawks for quite a bit of money).

In conclusion you seem to be overreacting to a completely innocuous, object caption for a tweet.

Saying that his comments might overshadow his play in the field is not an insult to Reid.

Overshadow simply means that many might pay more attention to his comments than to how he performs on the field.  And D. Newton or whomever said it is not necessarily wrong.  Even on this board, where almost all of us want him to succeed, the only thread about him after the game was about what the media ask him and his comments regarding Jay Z.  I haven't seen one single comment about how he played.  Maybe there are some in the game thread, but I didn't read thru them. Regardless, that is the definition of overshadow.

Is this the article you are referring to?

If so, I don't see anything remotely negative about Reid.

Quote

But Reid the football player might get overlooked because he kneels during the national anthem to protest social injustice and takes strong stances on social media.

“He’s a good man, a good father, a good husband, a good teammate,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “Again, he’s civic-minded. Right now, we’ve all just got to take a nice deep breath and we’ll be fine."

Shortly after the Panthers concluded their Aug. 2 Fan Fest, an event highlighted by a long touchdown pass from Cam Newton to Curtis Samuel that on the surface made cornerback James Bradberry look bad, Reid took to Twitter.

“My bad,” he wrote, taking responsibility for Samuel being so open because Reid overcommitted to covering tight end Greg Olsen.

Quote

Reid has blended right in since signing as a free agent this past September.

“He’s been a great addition to us,” Olsen said. “He brings an edge. He’s a professional guy. He’s smart. He’s been really good for that young D-backs group. He can play.”

That Reid finds himself in the spotlight outside of football doesn’t bother Olsen.

“If he didn’t think he could do both well, I don’t think he would do it,” he said. “Each guy handles things their own way. He has the awareness of what he can handle, what he can’t, what things get in the way and what things don’t. He’s done a good job separating the two, and when it’s time to play, he plays.

Nothing but positive comments about Reid.

I mean I don't like Newton as much as the next guy, but he isnt saying Reid will be a distraction. He's also not saying that his activism will somehow overshadow the team's success.

He is saying that Reid's activism might overshadow his own play on the field. I think thats a pretty valid point. If you go to any general NFL forums (/r/nfl being the biggest example) the only time Reid is mentioned is in regards to kneeling/activism. I haven't seen anyone outside of Carolina fans mention his performance as a safety since he got here.

But the title of his post IS saying that Reid could be a distraction and that's the point of my post...it is for the clicks, it's poo journalism.

    • i felt good for those few games that bryce didn't look like the worst in the league. all that fell apart again sunday.  i'm borderline just bailing on it all. i've been hanging on by a thin thread for several years. i mean it's not even fun to watch any football right now.
