Re-watching the game

I think our run defense will be very stout. I believe the pass rush will have its moments, but the soft zone coverage drives me crazy and I expect it'll hurt us this season. I believe this will be case with Ron or Washington, it doesn't matter.

First off, I appreciate you rewatching... I usually do, but I couldn't bring myself to do it this time...

I actually am more concerned about the run defense than the pass defense.  I will be surprised if the pass rush isn't formidable.  Even last night, the pass rush was making an impact... Josh Allen was just throwing quick passes and the LB's couldn't cover.  This will undoubtedly improve with Luke & Shaq (now of course the depth is concerning).

I also think the pass coverage will hold up too, especially if the pass rush is good.  The completions last night (at least with the 1st string) was not on the secondary.  Bradberry/Boston/Reid/Jackson should be a good unit.

Actually, the team moved away from zone last year towards the end of the season as we blitzed a lot b/c the pass rush wasn't getting there.

Anyway, the 3-4 inherently makes the pass rush more unpredictable (and hopefully more effective) b/c you don't know which guys are rushing or dropping.  The mixing and matching however puts more pressure on the EDGE guys (who are undersized compared to Olineman) to set the edge against the run and for the LB's to be sound in their gaps on run support.

The 4-3 became more in vogue in the NFL b/c of stopping the run in years past when teams utilized more heavy personnel and there were a lot of workhouse RB's.  As Ron stated, though, the NFL is absolutely a passing league now, and it's hard to find 4-3 DE's right out of college who are big enough to play the run and fast enough to get to the QB's.

Just my take, agree with your other points.

Until Ron Rivera shows me otherwise, i will expect the same crap he does every year.

1. Has a couple of good games

2. Has some terrible games

3. Has games that are close then he craps the bucket with clock management and horrible adjustments at half time.

like the saying  goes. You can polish a turd, but its still a turd.

It's a Panthers tradition to run terrible screens that look worse than any other team in the NFL. It's also Panthers tradition to have poop at safety. If you want tight coverage then don't draft zone CBs. We have CBs who need help, and the help is mediocre, so please don't expect tight coverage. Tight coverage = TDs with this secondary. We'll be playing it loose.

The o-line will be a work in progress. Our backup QBs are a work in progress. Just hope Cam's shoulder holds up.

No. Last night we debuted this new technique. No coverage.

There are probably still receivers running wide open across the middle of the field in BOA while Carter and Smith stagger around like they're extras on the set of The Walking Dead.

Nah, just Cole Beasley.  Hes actually still on the field banging everyones mom.

The bills are going to be a 12+ win team this year. Their defense is going to be a big part of it. I’m not worried about losing this game because we did not put our best players on the field. I think the game would have tipped more to the panthers side with our best out there. And in the regular season, the game would be more specifically planned to beat the bulls, not to evaluate individual positions.

The bills would have also game planned against us, but which of their key starters did not play? I couldn’t figure this bit of info out...

regardless, I think the regular season panthers would have either won or made a closer game than what happened Friday night. Not worried one bit.
