TE Tandem

Not much talk about the TE tandem that is emerging.  Manhertz, a punishing blocker, seems to have started to develop hands.  Ian Thomas is not a rookie any longer and should be as good as most team's starting TE.  Olsen, if he can stay healthy, still has something left. The  Panthers have never had a TE corps this good before. 

Considering how the LOL (left offensive line--and I hope LOL is not appropriate) develops, Manhertz could play a bigger role in the blocking scheme, lining up beside Williams to reduce his vulnerability.

2011 Olsen had 540 yrds  5 TD

2011 Shockey had 455 yrds  4 TD 

This would be great , but I think the current TE trio will allow us to spread the ball and dink and dunk when needed. A Win is a Win...

yes--each brings a different skill set too.

I think young Olsen and Shockey were a bit better than what we have currently, but Ian Thomas does have a very high ceiling.

I gotta be honest . . . I had no idea that Manhertz had never played football before the NFL.

When you look at him through that lens, the fact that he can block as well as he can is actually pretty exceptional.  If he adds good hands and decent route running to his game, he's got a chance.

Lot of variables. On paper doesn't seem like a great group. Hopefully Olsen can give us something and Thomas plays to the best of his ability

Yes, I'm excited about this season...

Given the makeup of this team there isnt much room for a TE tandem. In 2011 we had one other significant receiver in Smith.

Who was the third TE?  Thomas' numbers as a Rookie :  36 catches, 333ards.

Olsen  27 catches 291 yards in 9 games.

I think a healthy Olsen and a Thomas that is not a rookie could match those numbers--if you add Manhertz and his blocking/receiving--a more productive/useful tandem?

I look at the TE spot's value as blockers as well.  With the left OL weak, that could be critical.  Those looking at yardage and TDs are not seeing the big picture.

Did want to state that none of our top TE's (Olsen, Thomas, Manhertz) played tonight.

This tells me Rivera is already sold on those guys making the roster and wanted to see the other guys.

Or give them a chance to play for the film.  Good point.  I expected Manhertz, which was a bit odd.  Maybe a slight injury or something?
