...been saying i smell a PSL ***** comin with new stadium talk... how will he weather alienating 62K...We have a fickle fan base...hate to see the stadium leave down town...oh btw..fug soccer....Panthers cross the border i most likely wont see another live game... i like the experience of downtown.... to me it would be embarrassing on MNF and the announcer says: 'Live from Rock Hill'

Good post.

You know, it was only good news all the time for the Charlotte Hornets (not the Bobcats we have now) and for a decade the team set NBA attendance records and there was a gigantic love-fest that appeared it would never end....

....and then the owner made some bad decisions, and the fans abandoned the team.

History has a habit of repeating itself....

....Tepper better tread lightly.

One word “Atlanta”

Exception, not the rule.

I don't think u have been paying attention.

"In the ten years between 2007 and 2017, ten more soccer-specific stadiums were built for MLS clubs. Currently, 14 teams play in venues that are soccer-specific (Portland’s Providence Park is included because though it was originally built for baseball, it was later renovated specifically for soccer usage, and Toronto’s BMO Field is not included because it was renovated in 2016 to add CFL football).

Soccer-specific is also the dominant model for expansion in the near term. In 2018, D.C. United is moving from multi-purpose RFK Stadium to Audi Stadium, and new franchise LAFC will begin play at soccer-specific Banc of California Stadium. Minnesota United FC will move to their new purpose-built stadium, Allianz Field, in 2019. Miami is also expected to build a soccer-specific stadium in the near future to accommodate an MLS franchise.

Even with Atlanta as a notable outlier, clearly the league still believes in the soccer-specific stadium model. Garber’s statement does, however, leave the door of opportunity slightly ajar for other multi-use stadiums in the future.

MLS is a league built on fan experience. Though attendance is strong and getting stronger, television viewership has not kept pace. The league’s fans seem to prefer seeing games in person rather than on a screen, which is a potential pitfall, but one that can be tackled in time.

Commissioner Garber is right to suggest soccer-specific stadium development is what has transformed the MLS. It has been perhaps the prime driver of MLS growth in the last 15 years.

It is also very likely that the story of the league’s growth from this point forward will depend on maintaining and expanding the model of fan experience afforded by soccer-specific stadiums. The future health of the league depends on it."

https://soccerstadiumdigest.com/2017/12/soccer-specific-stadiums-key-to-mls-past-and-future/

"The MLS has told bidders it wants a modern, dedicated soccer stadium in or near downtowns."

https://www.wfae.org/post/city-committee-declines-countys-offer-memorial-stadium-mls#stream/0

But that interest, even from a major sports owner like Tepper, isn't enough on its own. MLS requires bidding groups to have a plan for a soccer-specific stadium.

Watch and listen to the video in that last article linked.  The local press has chosen to ignore the issue (a soccer specific stadium that is).

Yeah they did, against the wishes of the voting public.

And then the NBA put a team in it that has only lost....lost games....lost money, lots of it.

Good job.  You paid for the stadium in 1995 and now new owner wants to destroy and build new stadium that will be paid by new PSL owners.

I didn't.  I'm a Charlottean but lived in NYC then, didn't contribute a dime to that stadium.

Do you believe Tepper will be able to line up 70,000 folks to pay for PSL's?

Will you do so?

I don't think he can.  PSL's are a one-and-done deal in a town the size of Charlotte (especially given his misreading of the political climate).

???  Charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities.  Do you know how many more people live around the Charlotte area now compared to when the stadium was built?  If the PSLs were selling then, they will sell now for a new stadium.

You are missing the point again.  #1 season tickets will be cheaper due to MLS #2 Charlotte metro area is almost 3 million people so 70k people in immaterial  #3 Companies will be buying PSLs like crazy.

My buddy and I already agreed to buy 6 PSLs whenever MLS team arrives.

You are missing the point...  soccer fields are larger than NFL fields.  That’s why MLS does not want to settle to play on NFL field. Atlanta is designed for MLS because it’s large enough.  Tepper wants the same.

I'm not missing anything.  You need to go read the linked articles.

MLS wants to be standalone and don't want their teams to play in stadiums that are 65% empty.....which would be the case here --- Charlotte is no Atlanta from a population perspective, overall and in terms of folks who are invested in soccer.

Panthers also offer interest free financing for like 5 years... PSL cost like $20 a month lol...

I am not missing anything....you are completely overestimating, everything!

Look, it's clear we will not find any common ground so let's bag it at this point....

....only time will tell which of us are correct.

Good luck with plowing a bunch of hard earned $$$'s into PSL's --- I am going to decline to do so (assuming the scenario ever develops, which is a longshot) and believe that should I desire to attend a game, with all costs factored in I will be able buy tickets from you at a discount vs. what you have invested in them.

Cheers mate.

I’m overestimating everything and find common ground?  Oh hell naw...  get your ass back in here.  I’m just starting.

Netflix $17 a month.  PSL $25 a month. Starbucks $6 per latte.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
