Lets say Sly turns out to be another Butkus(or whatever his name is) and he is traded to Jets and becomes a star kicker and we yet again give away a good player which is the dumbest thing to ever do. Unfortunately that is what our GM does and with a cost of losing a possible star player.

There's a league full of camp kickers who have made a few kicks. What makes people think hes special when nothing suggests he is and considered a choker in college?

Dumping Gano after one preseason game would be the height of idiocy, but I’d gladly trade Sly for 7th.

Dumping Gano, one of the leagues highest paid kickers.  Coming off a pretty mediocre at best year minus the one giants kick.

Is pretty fugging smart

Trade: Ravens are sending kicker Kaare Vedvik to Minnesota in exchange for a 2020 5th-round draft pick, per league source. Vikings could wind up using Vedvik as their kicker and punter.

For however you feel about Gano, the reality from a pure business standpoint is he has a high cap number the next few seasons when he will be 33 and year 34 years old, and he's already dealing with health issues. If Slye keeps booting kicks in preseason, well, it doesn't take a genius to figure out where we go from there. This is a good thing for the Panthers. Much like I hear about how having a good backup QB is a nice thing. Competition.

The irony of a thread about Catanzaro (the guy who closed out the season last year and caused the same ruckus about replacing Gano with him) missing two XP kicks in one preseason game and then retiring, is incredible.

Yet instead of seeing this as a cautionary tale, we have people in here ready to trade Gano and hitch our wagon to Slye after one preseason game.

Again, I’m all for replacing Gano with a better and cheaper option...just like I would be with any position on our team. But the only rational response is to wait until the end of preseason at the very least to make a decision on whether Slye IS that better option. Anyone who wants to pull the trigger now is being incredibly silly and reactionary.

They ask for Slye and offer a conditional 7th round pick (conditional on Slye being on the roster during the regular season). Your response is...?

Man.. if only this was more than a hypothetical.

Heard the same poo when Butkner was here. Gano lost a lot of dn important games than he's won. It's idiotic to think he won't do the same AGAIN..

That's not really true.  There were some games Gano contributed to losing, but over the last couple of years he has been one of the most accurate kickets in the NFL.  He has had two chances at kicking game winning fg's in the last two seasons, and made both of them.

Don't get me wrong, I wish we had kept Butker because he was younger and cheaper, but that doesn't mean Gano has been bad.
