All GM’s did in years past.  But just remember he has to remain on the main 53 man roster to remain on teams IR.  Which means someone else would have to be cut.  It was made that way so people stop redshirting 10 guys in training camp.

Good point... I did forget that they had to be on the initial 53 before placing on IR

That's only if they want to bring a player back during the season. Teams routinely put players on IR during TC (Corey Coleman, Jermaine Kearse, etc. already this year), but those players can't come back until next year.

However, young players like Miller have to go through waivers if placed on IR during TC/before the cutdown to 53. Not usually a problem but there is a risk someone claims them, a la Belichick claiming Tyler Gaffney when Carolina tried to IR him during 2014 TC.

Hurney has made a habit of placing late-round draft picks and undrafted rookies on IR as a way to keep players who may not be ready to contribute/ have a clear path to the roster without exposing them to waiver claims... It's a gray area but I'm sure he's not the only one...

Corn Elder and Damiere Byrd in year's past come immediately to mind... I also remember Daeshon Hall having a minor injury during the year (and the team IR'ed him)

This is why I suggested expanded Regular Season rosters to 63, 10 practice squad spots, 5 protected players on the Practice Squad in a Restricted Free Agent fashion. No need to IR guys who don't need it. They lose valuable time with the team and in practice. Part of the reason injuries hit teams so hard is there is no developmental aspect to the league any longer.

Put stipulations on who starts in pre-season (No one with more than 4 years experience, no one off of their rookie contract), expand joint practice sessions for ones to work versus ones of others teams, and use the 4 weeks of Preseason for development of the backend of the roster.

They aren't even listed at the same spots on the depth chart. Obada and Bryan Cox are down ends.

Likely a product of only having one format for listing the depth chart. They chose 3-4 as the format. They have to fall somewhere on that list even if they are going to mostly contribute as 4-3 ends when we line up that way. One of them might not make the roster. The first depth chart in our new look defense probably isnt something to use for drawing concrete conclusions.

I thought Christian Miller was going to come down with a mysterious injury late in the pre-season and get the ol rookie IR redshirt season, but if Burns has lingering ankle problems, they might keep him on the active roster if he can show out during the preseason. If not I still think he ends up on IR and someone like Obada, who might not have made the roster, sneaks in for another season.
