We didn’t really ride him into the ground last year...

Oh really?

I would definitely consider continuing to play him when he was very obviously struggling to throw the ball to be riding him into the ground. After that Steelers game, he could barely throw yet we played him another five games like that.

Which is why the emphasis on a competent back up, a banged up Cam is better than Heinecke for a team with playoff aspirations and jobs on the line. I'm not saying I agree with that sentiment, but I think that was the thought process, also Cam saying he was good to go, even though he himself knew he was hurt.

Gantt was saying that during TC last year... no long ball... QB doesnt look right... etc etc... they knew, they just coudnt say it directly.

If the GM and coaching staff knew it, and went into the season with Allen and Heinke and a hope and a prayer, they all should’ve been fired

that’s all I have to say about that

We kind of did. I get that we had an outside shot at the playoffs but Cam was done before the last saints game. When the damn owner has to tell Marty Hurney “he’s done. Everyone can see it. The fans. Teammates. Everyone” then that to me signals incompetence in management. Like he actually had to say that out loud instead of the people in charge knowing. That interaction was really eye opening for me.

I misunderstood the comment. Just got off a red eye and not thinking properly. Thought what you meant was we rode him so hard that he got hurt. I agree we benched him way too late. We could’ve maybe even made the playoffs with a healthy QB in there earlier.

I fully expect nail break blitzes and defenses testing the long ball the early part of the season. Part of the reason we have guys that can break loose in one on one matchups are the home run slant and hitch plays. We threw no deep balls last night that i can remember

Going thru something similar. Tore my right rotator and bicep tendon, had surgery then screwed everything up again. Going back under the knife next month

Sorry---shoulder surgery is a bitch to rehab.  I was not mentally prepared for it---

Cam should have had his arm cleaned up two years ago yes, but he didn't. He chose a holistic approach with a PT. That was a bad decision but it's in the past now. With that said changing his motion and actually being protected in the pocket will be very beneficial.

Plenty of clinical research showing that PT is just as effective as surgery in most cases involving the shoulder.

I think it was obvious that Cam's throwing motion changed in 2017. He threw much flatter and had to rear back more to make up for the loss of range of motion moving the ball all the way back in his set up. If I saw it and told everyone that was the case then the team surely knew. After 2017 they should have done the cleanup instead of waiting until they had no choice. I wonder if Cam was the main reason as he didn't want surgery and rehab. Who can blame him. Rehab is a bitch and you never know if you get all of your function back until after the fact. The result is a gamble but the pain is a sure thing.

Show me the last time Cam threw like this. I'll wait. He'll never be the same. But we can hope Cam at 70% is good enough to deliver a title, or we're in for a long wait.

Actually, what that shows me is how much his mechanics have improved.  He threw that almost side arm and off his back foot.  Not quite falling backwards, but definitely not striding into with this body.  I hope what we've been seeing in camp is the real deal, because his motion in camp is light years ahead of that.

Also, while it was an 88 yard play, the ball only went about 50 in the air.  Still a long way, but we've seen consistent 40-45 yard in the air plays in camp.

I think we all hope to see the real Cam Newton this year.

Cam also shouldn't have been played down the stretch in '16 when he was obviously injured and we were out of contention and then we rode him into the ground again last year. From an outside perspective (which admittedly is imperfect at absolute best) it just seems like this entire shoulder injury situation has been poorly managed. At least Cam seems to understand that from his perspective now. His shoulder will likely never truly be 100% again, but hopefully it remains a manageable situation with smarter management of the situation.

And based on Week 17 of last season, we may have had a better chance with Allen playing sooner than an injured Cam. Considering the weapons we have on offense, having a guy that can execute the entire offense, at this point, is better than someone who can't deliver the ball downfield, effectively making us 25% of what we could be.
