Will Grier

What's everyone's thoughts? I think he is still really raw and his short and intermediate throws concern me. Didn't help Larsen was getting blown up all night though.

I think he looked pretty good after the 1st couple of series when he settled down.  He just needs some time.  I watched most of his games last year (in-laws are huge WVU fans), and he carried that team and put up some insane numbers.  He was in consideration halfway through the season for the Heismann.

Remember, Kyle Allen looked so bad last year he got cut (and was behind Taylor Heinicke and Garrett Gilbert before that) and now he's the backup QB.  I remember Igo writing an article about how Allen just didn't look like a NFL QB at all.  

Everything about Grier has been solid, and I still don't think the team sees the backup QB competition as closed yet.

He bounced back some, that shows progress. He'll take some time to develop, but bouncing back and throwing a clutch TD is nothing but good for him. 

That incompletion in the corner was a pro AF throw too. 

3rd string this year and he'll be good to go next year as our backup

Her did some nice things but he's got a lot to learn. I'm looking forward to seeing how much he improves each week.

Idk, he threw a few hooorible passes. He looked ok on screens. He had a lil come up at the end of the game. Imo Allen looked much better. Hopefully he shows a lil more next week.

I only saw the second half and I thought he looked okay in his second half play. There doesn't seem to be much velocity on his mid-range balls though, even when he's throwing into traffic. Maybe I'm just used to the old Cam lasering those balls, but they seemed weak.

He's going to have growing pains which is what we all expected. He'll chill at #2 behind Cam for a while and take notes. Maybe in a few years we'll see what he's really capable of.

Cam is healthy and even after preseason is over we do not need to rush to any conclusions. I’m assuming Allen and Grier both be designated as back ups pending further developments.

He looked bad his first two drives. Bad-bad. Concerningly bad. Those wobbly ducks ending up in the dirt behind the receiver's feet and the stare-down that led to an interception were mistakes even a rookie shouldn't make. 

But I saw a huge turnaround in the second half. His last drive he looked so poised and comfortable in the pocket, and his passes were all on point. A starting WR would have brought that corner pass in for a TD so as far as I'm concerned he had two on the night. 

I guess his first couple drives were just all nerves. But he really put those concerns to bed in the second half.

Honestly, he looked like a rookie 3rd round QB should look. He needs some more work, but you could tell he was settling down into the game as it went on.

Allen looked pretty decent but I imagine they'll switch the QB order next game just to see the two with the other personnel sets.

I’m not sure if it was nerves as much as it was Larsen getting absolutely manhandled and pressure up in Grier’s face. He got smacked a couple of times which gave him dancing feet. I think Grier is gonna be ok. Ideally we want him to come in and win games if Cam has to miss anytime. Not ideally, he becomes the starter because Cams arm is fuged. In both cases everyone should be rooting like hell for this guy.

Block out the noise of dumb fans in this fan base who want him to start over Cam because those fans have an agenda and don’t know football. Don’t take it out on Grier to offset bias.

I was honestly very unimpressed. He didn't push the ball well to his receivers, he was VERY inaccurate, and relied on his check downs far too much. Reminded me of Clausen out there truth be told. 

It's only the first preseason game though so I'm not going to hit the panic button.

Were you more impressed with Allen, who got 40% of all his passing yards on two check-downs to CAP? Just curious if the standard is the same. Because what I’ve seen on here since last night was:

Allen throws dump-off to CAP: “damn, Allen looks sharp”

Grier throws dump-off to Holyfield: “Clausen 2.0”

Allen drops back, misses his receiver: “ah, bad route”

Grier drops back, misses his receiver: “gonna be selling encyclopedias in two years”

Worth noting that our game plan now contains a lot of passes to RBs. Shouldn’t let that get in the way of a good bias though. 

My impression of Grier was that he looked really nervous and unconfident in his first two series. He didn’t have good body language. Wasn’t patient in the pocket. Started 3-7 for 21 yds and a pick. Did not look good. Came out in the second half looking a lot more confident and played that way, hitting his man on a slant for 14 and then a TD pass to Holyfield. Went 6-9 for 56 yds and a TD in the second half — numbers that, were they attributed to Allen, would be off the charts impressive.

Allen wasn't drafted in the 3rd round and doesn't carry the same expectations. 

Having said that, Allen passed the eye test better than Grier. He looked more comfortable in the pocket and his passes were designed screens/short passes. Grier's were checkdowns because he wasn't throwing downfield that well - Throws down the field looked like a chore for him - and Grier missed on those checkdowns quite badly a few times. He did look better in the second half, and it is encouraging that he is going through his reads, but he did not look poised or comfortable back there. O-Line did him no favors, but I expected to see more from him. 

BUT like I said, it's the first pre-season game, I'm not panicking yet.
