Kicker?

If Thomas frigging Davis can get cut, let's dispense with this hand wringing over the kicker.

Thomas Davis wasn't cut.  Davis played out his contract & the Panthers declined to offer him a new one.

Gano has 3 yrs left on his current deal which was agreed to in March of 2018.

This is what Hurney said at the time the new deal was agreed to:

“He’s been very productive in his time here and he had as good a year as I’ve seen a kicker have last season,” Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told the Observer.

“To solidify that position, which let’s be honest - he’s the guy that’s in position to win games for you - I think it was very important for us to get him signed and in the fold for four years.”

“It’s not only field goals with Graham, it’s (also) kickoffs,” Hurney said. “His leg is so strong. He just gives you so much versatility with the kickoffs (and) on field goals.”

This is a very odd thing to choose to argue about. He wanted to keep playing for the Panthers, the team chose to part ways because of age and contract numbers. At the end of the day that's what it boils down to. That's no different from the situation with Gano. If the front office decides Gano's contact doesn't line up with his current play/injuries, you think he won't be shown the door in favor of a younger and less expensive option the same as Thomas Davis Sr was?

Tbh someone should have shown the "why your team sucks" crew this thread, and this honestly would have been all that needed to be said. Only fans of a perennial losing franchise would go to these lengths to prop up a mediocre kicker.

You're kidding right?

There were no "contract numbers" and as such no financial ramifications for not offering Davis another deal.

There are significant financial ramifications for cutting Gano.

This is @Billy_T right? :Eyes_Emoji_42x42:

You always give yourself away sooner or later. The quotes with underlines are a dead giveaway lol.

Safe to say we can end this convo here, good day.

Appears you are not interested in dealing with the facts.  Clearly you do not understand what the facts are.

Oh he missed a few in practice? Well we've heard for multiple pages about how normal it is for kickers to miss some. Or does that only apply to Gano? How he responds and plays on Friday when the lights are on will be the true test.

Sounds like ur all-in on Slye.  Do u think he's good enough to carry the load for an entire season?

In a possible future Ron will riverboat it up and say fug FGs and XPs, we are going for max points 24/7 - it’s endzone or nothing.

I wish I had kept the article, but a couple of years ago, one of the writers did a thing where he showed teams should go for it on 4th down far more often than they do. While, yes, sometimes, you'll be your defense in a bind with a short field, sometimes you turn in a punt or FG drive into 6. His premise was the current decisions are more about deflecting blame than sound strategy.

All-in after one preseason game? Now that would be foolish. Like I said in the post you quoted, it all depends on how he responds the rest of the way in preseason. If he is still playing lights out in games, then you have a tough decision to make. But the likelihood of us cutting Gano is low. I don't know how many more ways I can type it up for some of you that watching another potentially just as good and cheaper kicker walk away for nothing is very disadvantageous for this team. Fans want the best team, it's no different from the discussion that has been had all these offseason months on addressing the backup QB position just to be sure. Why would we be that diligent with the most important position on our roster, and not show that level of expectation to another important position like kicker? Especially one who is amongst the top paid at their position? At the end of the day either you dudes either want to win or you don't. We aren't going to get the back to back winning seasons thing off our backs by continuing to rationalize mediocrity.

There is a HS coach who virtually never punts and goes for the onside kick every game.   Made a lot news awhile back.

He made a field goal in a preseason game. If that’s not proof enough, I don’t know what is!

Butker turned out to be pretty good when the real games started.  There's no guarantee Slye will do the same...even if he does continue to perform well in pre-season games.

I don't think you are giving Gano a fair shake...he has outperformed Butker over the last 2 years.

Butker has done well no doubt, but Gano has done a little better.
