Barnwell’s offseason priority list for the Panthers:

1) Address OT position

2) Find a Free Safety

3) Add an Edge Rusher

4) Decline option for Butler

5) Draft a Center

I would think Barnwell should be pretty happy with Hurney’s off-season.

So your saying fire Hurney and sign Barnwell as GM.

It is gonna be that kind of year.

I generally agree with your assessment...the longer I watch the NFL, the more apparent it becomes how thin the line can be between being a great team and a subpar one...

I do like the on paper talent and depth of this team, which I believe is as good as any team in Panthers history.

That being said, our division and overall schedule is difficult, and inevitably we are going to have to win close games to be a double-digit win team.

I personally think the team will fall somewhere between 6-10 and 11-5.  I think the talent level is too high to lose more than 10 games (unless Newton gets hurt), and I think with our division and playing the AFC South, NFC West, and the Packers, there are too many challenges to win more than 11.

I will say this... if this team can make the playoffs with this schedule, they will be battle-tested and could potentially go all the way.

With 2016 first-rounder Vernon Butler failing to emerge next to Kawann Short, the Panthers loaded up on interior help by signing Dontari Poe and then adding Gerald McCoy as an impact free agent from Tampa.

Did we adjust his deal or something to free up cap space? Because I'm pretty sure Poe was here last year as well, and I don't remember hearing of any restructure in the works. But, being an out-of-towner, I miss smaller local things quite often.

Na, he just messed up. Barnwell is good, but that's a bad look.

I kind of agree with you but I think that we have a great team right now and even though it is largely dependent on Cam’s health, I think even with Allen or Grier we should be a 6 to 10 win team and as low as 4 would shock me. We haven’t ever had less than 6 with Rivera and it’s an odd year...

Barnwell's a smart guy. He's been pretty darn accurate with his "likely to improve/decline" lists over the past 2 years (i.e. Improve list: 9 of 11 improved. Decline list: 10 of 11 declined). Hell, he even picked us last year to "decline" & yeppers, we ended up with 7-9. Besides us, he picked the Niners, Bucs (really? :eyeroll:), Jets & Giants to improve.

This morning, he picked the Rams, Saints (YES!), Cowboys, Chargers & Dolphins to decline!

I have a love/hate thing with Barnwell.  No doubt he is smart but he comes across as one who is slow to recognize trends and changes during the season and sticks to his guns even when facts get in the way.   Unrelated but if you like Panthers getting national attention this write up from CBS Will Brinson (who has a history of decent Panther analysis) had the Panthers as a top pick to surprise the league on offense.

On the podcast, Brady Quinn called me out for choosing the Panthers because they ranked 10th in offensive yards per game last year. That's fair, but I stand by the pick for two reasons. One, they ranked 14th in points per game last year and two, their quarterback just had a shoulder surgery this offseason. The Panthers are also 60-1 to win the Super Bowl; they're not some behemoth people are scared about at the moment.
