Panthers' camp observations: 1. Efe Obada missed his second straight practice for personal reasons, but coach Ron Rivera said the DE is expected back today; 2. In the only padded practice of the week, reserve tight end Cole Hunt took a shot so hard you could hear it halfway across the field. Younger players trying to prove themselves; 3. LB Luke Kuechly working with the second team defense? No, he hasn't been demoted. Just getting some reps with younger players. 4. Cornerback Javien Elliott may be working himself into a roster spot; playing nickel with the first team, he had his second pick in two days; 5. Veteran WR Chris Hogan working some with kickoff returns, "doing whatever I can to help the team.''

Practice got a little heated at the end today and Panthers coach Ron Rivera had a little talk with players after a scrum between backup players. Rivera said the heat from Sunday afternoon's practice and telling players this was the only padded practice of the week probably was a factor. Has been a fairly quiet camp until now.
