Why Kalil and TD playing for other teams is a good thing. And actually should be celebrated.

The rub with DG was how it was handled. It remains to be seen how Kalil and TD look in hindsight. Olsen was one we shouldn't have extended and did.

He handled them pretty bad, but IMO that was NOT the rub with most fans.

Smitty was a lot of Panthers fans all time favorite player...those fans aren't ever going to get over whomever it was that was finally going to pull the plug on him.

We are slowly rounding the corner on having fans be fans of the team...and not a player...but if we ever have to trade or cut Cam, I think you will see a lot more of the same again.

TD was probably willing to play here on the cheap for vet min or close to it because he has his charity he works with, kids are in school with long term friends etc, and at the end of your career, relocating isn't worth the headaches for a temp job. Also, he didn't know he would get offered 10m for 2 seasons with the Chargers. In the end, I would have liked for TD to have stayed because of what he brings for the price we would be paying. However, if he doesn't fit into the 3-4 mold I can understand why they moved on.

I sure hope we are rounding that corner. I suspect there would always be fanboys of certain players but that's OK until they develop a fanaticism. I mean, Hardy still has a fanatic on this board he he had 1 year to remember. It would help if we could actually string two winning season together. It's hard to make it about the team when the team falls on it's face every other year like it's on a scheduled blooper reel.

Agree though I think with TD he’s still a solid player even if as a backup for vet min and we didn’t even consider keeping him for that...

I understand your thinking here, but at the same time... I am trying to decide which LB on the roster I would drop for him.... With our defense being 3-4 now, I just dont see him being a good fit.

If you want to know why they gave him that much....go back to the Bolts/Pats playoff game last season.

I remember saying it then...the Bolts need someone like Luke or TD to have a shot in this game.

They, much like the Saints don't know when the musical chairs music is going to stop...they are willing to do anything (outside of spending real money, as the Spano's don't have any) to take a shot at a ring.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
