The Gaulden experiment is officially a failure

Eh, he's still only 24. He'll still get time on the field, but the depth with Boston doesn't hurt. Let's see how he does with more on his plate this year. I'm not optimistic after his shaky start at camp either, but I don't think it's said and done  yet.

I’m alright with this. Like others have said, it’s bolstered by the fact that ER can now slide to his natural position. Plus, his contract is only $3 mil if he reaches his incentives. Our defense is looking pretty solid when you look at the starting lineup.

If he balls out, sweet, we’ll sign him for a few more years. If he’s okay, sweet, invest an early pick in a safety and let him learn behind the vets.

I feel the same way. He's not going to a stud or anything but our secondary is going to be looking a hell of a lot better than it did at times last season. To be able to add such a solid piece at a position of need this late in the off season is always great.

And depth is important.. If we just stuck with Cockrell/Gaulden at safety and Cockrell got hurt, we would be getting roasted. Collin Jones would have to get significant time.

Adding one more guy to the secondary who can actually contribute is a great thing imo. Bradberry is really solid, Jackson is getting there, Eric Reid can play, Cockrell should be decent if he can stay healthy...

Gaulden/Jones should be on the field as little as possible at safety... Same goes for Elder, Seymour, other scrubs at corner. Really hope somebody comes out of nowhere in pre-season/camp who can make the 53 and make something happen.

Has he improved...some insight..

Per Pff ....https://www.pff.com/news/pro-the-panthers-get-a-free-agent-steal-with-the-signing-of-s-tre-boston

Since 2014, Boston ranks 12th among all safeties in overall grade (85.2) and holds the seventh-best coverage grade (92.2). His 11 interceptions since entering the league are tied for the 14th-most among his position group, placing him alongside names like Eric Weddle and Malcolm Jenkins.

Even more impressive has been Boston’s defensive success rate (forced incompletions+coverage stops/targets in coverage) of 41.5% through his first five seasons. He ranks fourth among all safeties with 75-plus targets and at least 2,000 coverage snaps during the PFF era, which began grading in 2006.

In coverage, he allowed an NFL passer rating of just 61.0, which was the eighth-best mark for a safety in 2018.

In all seriousness though I'm optimistic about the signing and hope he does well.

That was terrible, Luke has a few plays like that too, every player does.
