Boston is back

This is exactly what I wanted. A proven  vet at free safety while we bring other guys along as depth and for spelling the starters. So now it seems Hurney has done just about all he can to get us the personnel we need. Hopefully we stay healthy and don't have a rash of injuries.

Meh.

I mean he's better than what we have, but his original stint seems to be a bit overrated by many on here.

At best he was average, and more often than not he was out of position and took poor angles to the ball carrier.

Hopefully he has improved the past two years but last year against the chiefs he was burned and out of position on two consecutive plays for huge gains/TDs.

Granted, Arizona was a dumpster fire, but still... I honestly can't say I'm too optimistic about it.

This is the Carolina Panthers. "Average" safety play is pretty damn good for us and is about the best one can reasonably expect given what we're willing to invest in the position group.

I’m alright with this. Like others have said, it’s bolstered by the fact that ER can now slide to his natural position. Plus, his contract is only $3 mil if he reaches his incentives. Our defense is looking pretty solid when you look at the starting lineup.

If he balls out, sweet, we’ll sign him for a few more years. If he’s okay, sweet, invest an early pick in a safety and let him learn behind the vets.

Boston is much better when he can sit back and read the defense Infront of him. He's a gambler but solid tackler and solid coverage skills. If he can sit back and do that behind a projected much improved pass rush, we can at least expect Grade B Saftey play, maybe B+.

Tre Boston?  Solid tackler?

Good deal considering what we have, but I do not remember the Boston in Carolina being a good tackler.  An overly aggressive one who would miss a lot of tackles because of it, yeah.

He would wiff sometimes but he would also tag that fanny as Gettleman would say. He'd always go for the knockout. Hopefully he has matured since being in two different systems and coming back home.

He still does have some issues, definitely still throws his body around and it leads to a missed tackle that'll frustrate the ever loving fug out of you. But he's improved somewhat, and god it'll be nice to have an enforcer in the backfield.

Also I felt like solid was apt given that tackling is a bit of a lost art form in the NFL. He's better than okay but not quite good. Falcons and Debo have shown that you can get by with solid tackling but good coverage skills.

By adding one veteran piece at safety, you now have decent flexibility in nickel. Keep in mind, Arizona used Boston in multiple situations across the secondary, he wasn’t just a standard deep safety. Wilks and Rivera have a similar train of thought, typically, when it comes to personnel utilization among DB’s.

There are a number of possibilities now, which helps tremendously—not only in disguising looks, but matching up against athletic TE’s and other select personnel.

Tre is a gambler back there. He's not a good tackler and makes mistakes, but also has good ball skills and can come up with big plays.

Safeties like him are extremely dependent on pass rush. All DBs are to some degree, but a gambler will look great when the QB is hurried, and get torched repeatedly when the QB is clean for a couple of extra seconds.

With the pass rush we are looking at for this year, my hopes are high for Tre's performance this year.
