Tepper Wants a Retractable Dome Stadium

A new stadium is a bad idea at this point, even within 10 years.  That would only put BOA at a little over 30 years in age with improvements barely a decade old by then.  PSLs were a brilliant idea at the time, but it was a one shot silver bullet.  The Carolinas were starved for a home football team and folks were willing to drop a chunk of change for this precious new toy called the Panthers.  Plus the political/social/economical situation was far different than it is currently.  Baby-boomers aren't going to buy new PSLs, gen X would have to buy the bulk of them, but they are putting kids through college and looking to retirement.  Millennials should be the prime group and balk at paying face price tickets now, let alone having to foot the steep price for a seat license.

Tepper doesn't have to have a retractable dome, just an extension over the seating areas of the stadium thus creating a retractable roof feel, but the field stays exposed all the time.  A project like that could be done in an offseason.  This ain't baseball, players are allowed to get their uniforms a little muddy.

As far as hosting "a" Super Bowl, hotel space has been the greatest issue.  Charlotte likes to fancy itself in the biggest cities conversation, but still lacks the tools that the NFL wants to host the big game.  A dome is way down the priority list.  Secondly, I put "a" in quotes as I'm sure Charlotte will not be part of the regular rotation of the warm weather sites like gulf coast states, AZ and CA.  Hosting one SB in say 20 years is not worth the tax-payer money investment.

The Super Dome is 45-years old, as of today matter of fact.  The doors opened 8/3/1975.  So as much as y'all are praising Tepper, if he starts making overt threats to get a precious dome, then in my eyes he has hit George Shinn level fairly quickly.  It's obvious BOA stadium is not outdated or remotely obsolete, this is about a freaking roof.  To me, this is no different than George Shinn making threats to get more luxury boxes.  Remember, he moved the Hornets because he couldn't get money for a new arena because the old one that was out on Tyvola road lacked the amount of luxury boxes he desired.  I think if Tepper forces this issue, then he's going to cut his honeymoon period short with the fan base.  People love their Panthers, but they love their money even more!

Some are already complaining about what Tepper will do and do something for the organization/team and its fans which the former owner would have never done. Many of us here were looking forward to change and it has finally arrived. Why not give Tepper a chance to do what we have always wanted from a new owner that is getting things done with a plan and give us fans something to be proud of.

Simple analogy. Lets say I open a brewery. People love the brewery and spend tons of money at the brewery as well as Uber, taxis, hotel rooms because they can’t drive home....I should ask the government to fund part of the cost of building my brewery because of the extra dollars generated in taxes at all these other venues. This is only a discussion and proposal because it’s on a much larger billion dollar scale. It’s utter B.S.. Apply it to any business. Currently local governments(aka TAX dollars/OUR dollars) pay incentives for persuading mega corporations to come make MONEY in their city. It’s a house of cards in the long run. It won’t stop till it falls. How about I just be happy with the money I make with my brewery (insert billion dollar sports team) and leave the greed out of it.

Shinn also left because he was fuging around with cheerleaders and attendance was bombing because he was a prick.

It didn’t help with LJ and Alonzo we’re gone as well because he didn’t want to pay them (and LJ health issues).

Shinn also was trying to get a NHL hockey team here where he wanted either a new arena to house both, or build another arena for hockey

Tepper is nothing like Shinn. He is expanding what he wants at the stadium to get more events and teams in Charlotte. MLS, Soccer, Concerts etc would all be amazing. Just look and how the untapped event went at BoA and how much easier it would have been with a retractable dome.

Tepper wants a MLS team and the MLS doesn't want to use BOA.  Actually, the MLS wants a soccer only stadium, so actually were are talking about TWO new stadiums. Charlotte has plenty of indoor facilities for other events, Spectrum Center, Bo Jangles arena (whatever they are calling it now) so that's a weak argument that there's no indoor places to hold other events in Charlotte.  No, it's the exact same.  On a personal level Tepper may not be the prick Shinn was, but he's playing nice now by putting out feelers. I have feeling he's going to get inpatient and shrink that 10-year window down and when the city of Charlotte balks, that's when will see just how 'nice' Tepper plays with them.  Remember, he's a hedge fund guy, he can be cut throat if it came down to getting what he wants.

Amid all the threats, nobody thought Shinn would actually move the Hornets until he did. I was living in Charlotte at the time and everyone thought it was a bluff.  The Panthers are a business and Tepper is the CEO.  A multi-billion dollar business at that.  I wouldn't make any assumptions on what Tepper won't do when it come down to the what he deems is in the best interest of the team (his business).

With a mega business the economic benefit to a region can be huge. But the issue is when a mega corporation is expanding they may have multiple cities bidding so if you want the business you have to give concessions...

There's only one problem with the analogy...the Panthers are already here, they are not new.  If we are talking about getting a Super Bowl in the next decade or so, is that one week during the Super Bowl going to offset the tax payers money that built the new stadium?  Unless Tepper can get the MLS to use an existing site, then that has to be built to.  Property taxes jumped way up already this year in Charlotte, as much as 20% from what I've been told.

It seems to me the folks on board with this may not be paying the full tax burden in Charlotte (property taxes, daily sales taxes, etc...).  I guess it's cool idea when it's not their money.

Think I can help u here, some example.

Assume total city budget = $100.  Tepper gets $0.

City increases hotel tax, raises incremental $10, total budget now = $110.

How shud we spend the extra $$$'s?

Murder rate has doubled since last yr, hiring more police might be a good idea?

West Charlotte H.S. boys basketball couldnt afford to travel to state champ game, sounds like schools cud use some more $$$'s?

Or shud we hand over the extra $$$'s to a guy who already has $11 billion of his own?

For perspective entire budget for CLT is only $2.6 billion.

Yes but what I was saying is that a new hotel tax doesn't take money from the city. You are suggesting that a new tax on hotels takes away city services which is not the case.

I think you are suggesting that if we need new infrastructure such as schools or police force there shouldn't be new cash flow relating to a football stadium which is a whole different discussion.
