What does that even mean? Unless cam just dies Grier will be just a trading piece or backup like Anderson. I don't think his future Is with the Panthers. Best case is a trade.

Actually best case is he wins us a Super Bowl one day.

I can't lie, these posts about how intelligent he is when he hasn't played a single snap in an NFL game makes me look at some people funny. One of the biggest if not the biggest knock on Cam coming out of college on this very message board was would he be able to grasp an NFL playbook because of the offense they ran at Auburn. But reading between the lines you could see what it was really about when the only comparisons were with Vick, Russell, or Young.

Even as recent as the last few seasons I've seen fans here question Newton's intelligence on more than a few occasions.

I hope Cam has another 7-8 years in the tank as our starting QB, but we've been sorely needing a legit backup QB ever since DA retired and honestly, toward the end DA was straight trash too. I wasn't super excited about using a 3rd round pick on a QB, but given Cam's shoulder failing to hold up for two seasons in a row, we kinda had to do something. I think virtually everyone hopes that Cam is truly back now and that Grier is just insurance as a backup QB is supposed to be, but just in case he isn't we had to make some type of move to solidify that position group.

Absolute best case scenario? We just drafted the greatest QB of all-time in the 3rd round.

More realistic best case scenario? Cam is back and we turn Grier into a valuable trade commodity in a couple of years.

What's your reaction to this passage?  Entire article available in the link.

"In stating how Olsen means as much to the Panthers' offense as Davis means to their defense, Newton stated that where he helps out in particular is when Newton is calling plays - as Olsen's intelligence helps Newton with something that he is still not great at.

"I call him 'The Dictator' in the huddle, because I really have problems with calling plays even in year eight," said Newton. "And he kind of helps me. And his playmaking ability on the field is just second-to-none.""

Why don't you tell me what you perceive him to be saying there instead of linking it with zero remarks of your own?

Do you think that is two close friends who know each other very well simply joking around, or do you think Newton actually believes he is intellectually inferior?

On second thought. We don't need to interact further. Good day to you.

Man you guys get carried away with players during training camp...

I see Grier as a Journeyman QB but we will see. He may replace that one, literally, single fan in the stadium who wanted to bench cam for da when cam was healthy.

Other than knee jerk sarcastic remarks in game day thread I don’t see it here either. I’m lost as to where these cam haters are per usual.

I don't perceive anything.  In his own words Cam straight out said even as an 8-year veteran he still has trouble calling the plays and that he counts on Olsen to correct him.

In fact, in another article he said he gets it wrong half the time.  Here's the quote:

"Half the time when I’m saying a play, I’m wrong, and those guys, they fix it," Newton said. "It’s like my auto correct."

With 8 seasons under his belt, and still struggling to call the plays, I am only able to come up with 2 possible explanations.

1.  He's not putting in the requisite amount of time needed to have complete command of the playbook.

2.  He doesn't possess the intellect needed to have complete command of the playbook.

Put another way, Olsen is either studying harder, or is smarter.

Possibly there is a 3rd explanation I have missed.  Your thoughts?

Igo, aren’t you the same one who started a thread during OTAs dissing Grier because he threw an interception during one of his first practices as a rookie?  And the one who prematurely predicted that Allen would be the #2?  After a week into camp and without a single live game snap?

I’m pulling for the kid. sure, the mistakes will be there.  Hopefully he will continue to improve and be a huge asset to this team.

When you have a 3rd round rookie QB competing with former UDFAs who have very limited NFL game experience, I think the standard expectation is for that rookie to win the backup job.
