Soccer....

Cesc is the best young player in the world. That goal he had at the end of the half was an instant classic. They're making a mockery of Tottenham. I just hope we can fend Real Madrid off for another couple of years from taking him...

Real Madrid = New York Yankees

I just saw 3 in the Top 10 plays on SportsCenter. So buy your own metrics, you're wrong.

Maybe it was a slow day in sports? Hell, they've had things in the top 10 plays that barely qualified as sport.

My problem with baseball is there is 200 f**king games!

What about soccer though? You have your league games, then you have a couple different cups...then you have the champions league and if you bounce out of that, you go into the uefa cup (don't think they do that anymore). There are a ton of soccer games. Not 200 f**cking games but then again, they're very different sports and the pace of the game dictates the amount of games played.

And baseball isn't? You didn't make up a baseball field in the neighborhood?

Make up a field? We played in the freakin' street. Ok, we also had an empty lot but we spent just as much time playing in the street (basically stickball or bounceball).

one big reason why soccer is not as accepted in the USA is that there are many many nations in the world that are far superior at the game.

Then we should be dropping out of baseball very soon as the game is dominated by foreign players and we've won jack squat in the WBC. In 5 years of Olympic baseball, we won once. We suck at soccer because no one cares about it...and the small percentage that do, can't generate a team of players that can compete on an international level.

They just dropped a pooload of money into Premier League and La Liga rights, actually.

Different competitions. If baseball had a Champions League, that'd be different. Of course, MLB teams don't see a good reason (read: afraid of what might happen if they lose) to play the Japanese champion, despite the Japanese champion issuing a challenge more than once. In fact, Bobby Valentine tried to get the White Sox to play his Chiba team, they didn't even give him an answer.

Soccer has more players than baseball, actually. Does that mean no one cares about baseball? I just hope you aren't equating domestic league TV ratings and stadium attendance to success internationally.

Nobody watches the Brazilian league, not even Brazilians unless it's a derby match. Hundreds of millions of people watch the Premier League and La Liga yet between them England and Spain have mustered one World Cup title. One. Brazil has five. Spain has never even reached a World Cup final, England did once -- when they won it in 1966.

TV ratings for soccer have nothing to do with our lack of international success at it. We're wildly successful at men's volleyball -- to the tune of three Olympic titles and a bronze, do you know any one with season tickets to it?

Then I really question the inclusion of so many soccer highlights in the top plays. Seems clear that they're trying to generate interest in the sport because of their financial stake in it. Wouldn't be the first time. ESPN has all but dropped reporting on hockey as a result of their not renewing their contract to broadcast games.

Different competitions.

True but I was pointing out that there is no lack of soccer games for teams to play in. They play a shitload of games. Doesn't matter that they're different competitions, it was a comment that baseball has 200 f**king games (which in itself is a small exaggeration).

I wasn't basing success on either of those. More kids in the US play soccer than baseball? Really?

BUT...in all of those countries soccer can be considered their national pastime (or at least the equivalent of one). Every kid grows up watching, idolizing and playing the game. Maybe not literally "every" kid but probably well over 90%. Here, you'd be lucky to have that number approach 9%.

You could pick non-sports fans off the street and I bet a huge majority could tell you the name of a baseball, basketball or football player (hockey, I'm not 100% sure on though I bet most could muster up Gretzky or Lemieux). My bet is that very few could name a member of the USA soccer team.

We're just not a soccer country and we never will be. No matter what the soccer lovers say, the thrill of heading in a corner kick will never approach a home run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th or a drive down the field in the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter. Just won't.

BTW - I'm not anti-soccer....I'm just realistic about it's place in American sports.
