Understanding Cam Newton by PFF.

Recommended Posts

PFF has always hated Cam.

Funny how they pick and choose specific plays of that game leaving out the whole picture. That lions game was the classic Rivera/Norv shitshow, we get a 7 point lead in the first quarter and after that they decide to slow play until the 4thQ, in which they finally give Cam a fast pace no huddle offense and we put up 2 scores.

Oh that’s the game Funchess had 5 drops, and Samuel got the ball ripped from his arms and intercepted.

They can't even use an updated logo.

Most relevant post.

Also not a bad video, but on most of the bad throws Van Roten was either in Cam's lap, or a player off the edge was closing in. I watched this yesterday at home, if you notice on the miss in the endzone (final play) he can't adjust because he has to get the ball out before he is hit.

You can make that kind of video on ANY Quarterback without context. The only thing I took from it was we needed a better offensive line, and I am happy with the acquisitions, and players retained to insure the protection in front of Cam has been updated.

The TWO BIGGEST things from the 15' season on the offensive side of the ball were:

  • Time to throw (We now have our best OL on paper since 15' & 13')
  • Receivers that got open (We're upgraded over any season we've ever had with Cam except maybe 13')

Granted we fielded one of our better defenses that year as well, however I think this defense heading into 2019 is going to surprise even some of us homers.

If I remember correctly this was a hotly debated game. All of those things should be taken into account but at the same time Cam needs to make that play on the 2 point conversion. It is what it is. Rivera and funchess did nobody any favors but as the franchise you should be expected to make that game winning throw. So some of the blame should fall on Cam even though we shouldn’t have even been in that situation to begin with.

I think we can all agree on one thing though: be glad funchess is gone. The inconsistencies were mind numbing. He’d put together an incredible game, then next week drop 3-5 passes. I like funchess the person, but the player was unreliable.

Can't say anything in this video is wrong.  When Cam has good mechanics he looks like an MVP, when he doesn't he looks more like poo.  Sometimes it's because of pressure, but sometimes he just rushes himself when he does not need to.  It's been that way since his rookie year.  When you are as good as he can be, I will take 5 or 6 bad throws a game if you can get the other 25 or 30 good ones.   It's just when his line is bad and his recievers can't get open and it's more of a 50/50 split, that's when you start to worry.  I don't think that putting Brady or Rodgers or anyone else out there in that case would make this team much better, if at all.

Scott Turner has actually mentioned this a couple times this preseason where he is talking about getting Cam's eyes and feet to agree.  What he's saying is that as Cam needs to turn more than just his head when he's looking over the field.

Cam will often turn his head, see an open man and then immediately throw.  This is bad Cam.  This isn't talking about those crazy ad lib plays that you just can't coach, this is talking about your basic pocket throws.  When Cam is scanning the field, needs to constantly be turning his feet with his head as a fundamental part of his game.   If he does this, it allows him to immediately throw instead of having to either set his feet first to throw one of his patented lasers, or throw with poor mechanics and lower his accuracy.

Video is pretty good, but it still doesn't acknowledge that Cam's arm was not right.  Yes, that game shows the good and bad sides of Cam insofar as his mechanics and decision making go.  What it doesn't acknowledge is that even in the displays of good mechanics in that video, none of those throws were 20+ yards down field.  As good as the velocity may have appeared, a healthy Cam has even better velocity.  A healthy Cam has a LOT more range which would in turn spread the defense more, making the windows for throwing even wider.

I'm not saying this is best oline since then because u have no idea what we have. We have two guys coming off of pretty major injuries and a rookie that we don't know how he will be. Don't see how we can even close to comparing imo.

It's all we can go by fro now in relation to conversation / projecting. No one thought the 15' OL was going to be as good as it was til' it was.

  • Oher was an under-performing talent from Baltimore when we signed him
  • Norwell was in his 2nd year starting if memory serves being an UDFA
  • Kalil was still solid
  • Turner was becoming a repeat Pr-Bowl talent
  • Remmers was servicable

So comparing paper to paper, we are set up to have a similar / better OL than Cam's MVP season, there is still a lot to be decided and determined from this group, but it's hard to argue we haven't positioned ourselves pretty well moving forward.

The Video seemed pretty fair to me. How can people argue this point? When Cam is forced off of his spot, he tends to throw more incompletions. That's why most of us dislike calling him a scrambling QB because in all honestly he kinda sucks at scrambling.

Just gotta find an OL that can actually give Cam 3 seconds to throw the ball and a little room to step up and we'll be golden. We know he can work with sub par receivers.

I think Cam has done a pretty amazing job dealing with the poor o-lines he’s had in front of him. Put Brady behind those lines and he turns into Mr Invisible.

Yes he has footwork problems, everyone knows that. Difference now is we actually have people on the staff who can straighten it out.

Please provide the list of NFL QBs whose completion percentage gets BETTER when they are “forced off their spot”.
