Cam has been changing his mechanics.

Recommended Posts

A few years back, the greatest living drummer Neil Peart went and restudied his drumming technique and changed everything, even down to how he held the drum sticks. He came back as strong as ever and said he felt he had more control and capability with the new style.

If you have the talent, you can always hone or redesign your skills to perform at a higher level. Cam's got every tool in the kit and he has the brains to be able to change how he uses those. Good coaching will also help him refine it as he goes along. I've got faith that we'll see some really good play out there from him this year.

I think it should say "Cam has been cleaning up his throwing motion".

He likely can't fully change everything that he's been doing forever, but he can learn to use his hips, core, rotation, etc...to take some heat off of the arm/elbow/shoulder.

He's always been an arm thrower, now need to get the rest of the body up to speed to prolong the health of that shoulder.

Just my two cents:

I saw four throws. Cam's motion was more compact and closer to his body which indicates to be that more power and control is coming from his body than his arm, and the ball appears to be coming out slightly quicker in his motion (as before, the release seemed higher above his head). Now the release is much closer to his shoulder.

I think this will help him (and the line), perhaps noticeably if Cam is consistent with it.

Honestly, I am guardedly encouraged by this news. As I said, I think it could help greatly, but for me, the bigger question is whether Cam will consistently set his feet in the proper position and stay true to his new form when under pressure.

The other half of the battle will be just making better decisions after consistently going through his reads, and chucking the ball out of bounds when necessary. I believe we saw shades of this last season, but Cam was so hampered by his shoulder (and not being able to get the rock upfield) that we just could never get real clarity as to whether or not he had completely raised his game or not.

It's good to see him throwing.

I remember when Jake Delhomme changed his mechanics...that was the final year of his career in a Panthers uniform.

that being said...Cam has to change his throwing motion if his shoulder is going to hold up.  His wind up is incredibly long, and are seems to turn his shoulder incredibly hard with every throw.  Sticking with a shorter motion might prolong his career.

Cam and Jake are two completely different players and people. Jake was an old school gunslinger player who just chucked the ball his whole life. His QB drills with mccoy were pretty much limited to throwing the ball into a bucket. He did a lot to grow as a leader in a lot of ways, but physically there just wasn't a lot of attention to detail there. All of a sudden he was made to change his mechanics and all of a sudden he did something he hadn't had to-do in pretty much forever....he had to think about what he was doing physically and it got to his head. The coaches backed off and tried allowing him to revert to more natural throwing for him, but it was too late and he was messed up. Mentally Jake was a tough character in a lot of ways. With this, though, he couldn't handle it.

For Cam, much if his life is about perfecting himself physically and he shows an incredible amount  discipline in the way he trains his body. It's on a whole other level than Jake. Jake was just an old school football player. Cam is an athlete. Much of what Cam's training has been over the years physically has been to fundamentally change his routine till it becomes second nature to him.

Basically, Cam's nature and attention to improving himself physically puts him in a better position for success in changing his mechanics than Jake was.

Looked to me like he was throwing slightly differently. If this helps to not aggravate his shoulder I'm all for it. But in game I'd imagine it will be hard for old habits (old throwing motion) to not rear its head

A touch more over the top....good for the shoulder.

Let's see what happens when the bullets start flying, but I'm over here hoping like crazy.

Makes you wonder what Rivera/Shula/Dorsey were looking at all those years. Unfortunately it took multiple surgeries to convince Ron that something needs to be done.

Likely Cam had to convince himself, but Ron has never proven to me that he really understands the offensive side of the ball.  Likely just let the superstar be the superstar vs. butting heads and trying to fix it.

Could you imagine someone trying to convince Rivers to change his motion back in the day?

Which is why it's good he's throwing already.  It gives him time to build some muscle memory.  If he is consistent with his new mechanics (which is undoubtedly a primary focus), he should be fine when the bullets start flying for real.  An improved line should help as well.

As a defensive guy, Ron was never a QB/offensive guy.  He doesn't have the experience or expertise to talk about QB mechanics and such (most defensive oriented head coaches don't).  So he relies on his offensive coaches to do what needs to be done.  The problem is that he is also a bit too loyal and tries to give guys every chance to fix/improve things.  It's why he waited so long to replace Washington last year, and it's the reason Shula and Dorsey stuck around so long.
