So to answer why we don’t have a true FS

Recommended Posts

I thought I would post this to help answer the question of why we don’t have a true FS and are looking at putting another Hybrid safety into the lineup with Rashaan Gaulden.

The kid also does a really interesting video of our defensive cover types and how we disguise coverages.  Love his content.

For those who don’t want to watch till the end of the video to get the breakdown on the safeties, we basically have interchangeable safeties.   They will both rotate from SS to FS almost an equal amount so we can disguise coverages.

The answer is that every team can't have a good player at every position and its better to spend on the offensive/defensive line and QB than at FS

I don't think that's quite the answer. We've had many opportunities to upgrade the position, but have refused to.

Right but I think it might actually be true this year. I mean look at who we've got as our starters. Most of them on the defense are name players or early round picks.

Free Safety isn't going to be the reason if we fall short this year. It just won't the rest of the defense SHOULD be too damn good for that.

This. It's obvious that Ron values the front seven over the secondary. And while he sees the value in CB, he thinks he can just plug in scrap yard parts at safety and still field an elite defense. To be fair, he's actually done it. But, the NFL continues to evolve more and more toward a passing league. I wondered WTF the league was thinking when FA safety values tanked last offseason, but the rebound this offseason shows they realize that value now. Safety has always been a go-between between CB and LB, but that slider keeps hedging more and more toward CB and away from LB. Partly because of the NFL evolving more and more toward a passing league and partly because the NFL has virtually outlawed old school hard hitting safeties. If you don't let those guys hit, then they have to be able to cover. I just feel like we're lagging behind the curve here.

    • I want to throw in how much easier it is for a QB to develop and improve with a good oline.  Huge credit to the front office for spending the money on our two guards.  Cade Mays also had a 2nd really good game starting at center.  Love how he has developed and hope he's the real deal. Look at what Stroud is dealing with now in Houston after injuries and problems with their oline.  Strouds accuracy has been greatly affected as it seems like he doesn't trust his protection. Canales is doing a great job developing Bryce.  I think the QB whisperer might be for real. And obviously big props to Bryce.  First round pick that looks horrible in his first year.  Different coaches and systems.  Fans and media are calling him the biggest bust in NFL history and he looked like it in the first two games this year.  Gets benched.  Young man keep his cool and just continued to work and only worry about what he can control.  I hope things continue like this and we end up with a great success story. Bryce Young kept pounding.
    • Outside of Philly (who currently is #3 in pass defense) the rest of our remaining opponents are bottom 1/3 of the League in that regard.  Let's see what Bryce can do versus bad pass Ds.
